How to Improve Your Gameplay

Hints

Unlock Technologies and Research Cores

Unlocking technologies is the cornerstone of progress in the game. Navigating this can be a little daunting at first. Each tier you unlock presents a variety of new technologies. Some are given to you immediately upon unlocking the tier. In contrast, others must be acquired by locating and scanning either a damaged version of the item or a hard drive containing the technology blueprint. After obtaining a new technology, you must activate it in the tech tree by assigning specific research cores. Each technology requires a certain quantity and color of research cores for activation. You can check the number of unassigned cores you have in the bottom left corner of the tech tree.

Power Requirements and Accumulators

To activate technologies with power requirements, you must have enough accumulated power. Blue Core Technologies, in particular, will demand an additional condition: the need for accumulated power. Accumulated power is stored in your accumulators, which can be seen as the power metrics in the bottom right of your screen. The required power is drawn from your accumulators upon activation. Progressing through the tech tree not only opens up new opportunities but also enhances your gameplay.

Master the Core Composer

Once you've started unlocking technologies, you'll likely encounter the Core Composer. This large, buildable machine is pivotal for automating the placement of research cores in the game world. To master it, follow these steps: Install your Core Composer on power floors, produce research cores manually or automate their construction, and supply the Core Composer with cores. Understanding the workings of the core composer is key to effectively using research cores and navigating through the tech tree.

Relocate Research Cores

Flexibility in relocating research cores is crucial as your game progresses and your needs change. Moving cores won't deactivate activated items in your tech tree but will create a research core debt. You won't acquire more unassigned cores until you've replaced the ones you've removed. Remember that the game allows you to adapt and optimize your layout over time.

Understand Mass Collect and Mass Erase

Two technologies, mass collect and mass erase, are misleading at first glance. Mass Collect allows simultaneous collection of items from multiple belts and machines, while Mass Erase lets you dismantle or erase multiple buildables at once. Use these effectively to streamline your gameplay.

Vertical Power Transmission with Power Floors

Power floors are vital components for transmitting electricity from generators to machines. They don't transmit power vertically, but you can achieve vertical power transmission by stacking power floors upwards or downwards. Mastering power distribution is crucial for efficient factory operation.

Embrace Power Automation

Embrace power automation early in the game. Accumulators can save you from manually turning crank generators every few minutes. Connect your factory's power floors to accumulator substations to maintain a steady power supply.

Optimal Power Ratios

When setting up power automation with water wheels, maintain a two-to-one ratio of crank generators to water wheels for maximum efficiency. This cardinal rule ensures the highest possible efficiency for your power automation setup.

Find Planter and Thresher Items

Build and place five crank generators on your power floors to find planter and thresher items. After deciphering a task, follow the beacon to locate these items. You can also use the mining charge to reach challenging locations.

Use the Omni Seeker

The Omni Seeker is a unique tool that helps you locate various elements within the game world, including hidden resource nodes. Use it to find valuable resources and enhance your factory.

Leave a Trail for Navigation

Exploring new areas becomes more efficient when you place lights along your path, helping you navigate the terrain, discover ore nodes, and mark your exploration route. The compass is also valuable for orientation within cavernous spaces, but physical landmarks and lights serve as helpful reminders of your explored areas. This practice aids in uncovering new technologies, resources, and lore through scanning.

Strategic Tech Upgrades

It's essential to strategize your technology upgrades for optimal operations. Don't rush for the highest available technology; adapt to your needs. For instance, using fast inserters may not always be necessary. Replace machines or components only when needed. Remember, you might still require earlier technologies, like purple research cores, even after unlocking more advanced ones.

Visibility with Assembler Icons

If you press 'Alt' on your keyboard or the right stick on your controller, icons appear over assemblers and reveal what they are crafting. This feature simplifies resource identification across your factory, aiding expansion and layout adjustments. Assemblers aren't the only machines with this feature; drills and smelters also display crafting information, turning yellow when production slows and red in cases of issues.

Organized Mechanical Component Production

Efficiently produce mechanical components like conveyor belts and inserters in accessible locations to prevent a tangled mess on your factory floor. Proper organization becomes critical as you advance and require these components for more complex constructions, including research cores. Neatly stacking cores with core composers enhances tree progression and factory development.

Early Automation of Core Materials

Automate the production of essential building materials like conveyor belts, inserters, and power floors to maintain a surplus as you expand your factory. Use fast inserters to ensure quick production and limit material crafting by placing single items in container slots. Efficient automation helps streamline your operations.

Biobrick Production from Plant Matter

Begin producing biobricks early for efficient energy generation. Set up an assembler with limestone and plant matter storage containers, using fast inserters to load materials into the assembler and transport biobricks into another container. Crank generators power this setup, providing a reliable energy source while you work towards complete fuel automation.

Proximity of Iron and Copper Production

Optimize your early-game space by keeping iron and copper production nearby. These resources are crucial for expanding your base, and proximity reduces resource retrieval time. Once you unlock the M.O.L.E. terraforming tool, explore iron and copper nodes to maximize mining efficiency. Use mining drills and smelters with inserters for efficient resource processing, and consider adding power floors and containers for temporary storage to complete your starter mines.
