Diablo 2 reference
Easter EggsThe description for the Hubris card, which can be traded for a ring, includes a quote from someone named Jonfé Darontos. Jonfé Darontos is an anagram of “Stone of Jordan,” a unique and powerful ring in Diablo 2.
Fishing (and the Master Fisherman)
Easter EggsDespite there (currently) being no actual fishing gameplay in Path of Exile, fishing has become a running joke both within the game and among fans.
There are fishing rod items, as well as a character named Krillson, Master Fisherman, who will talk to the player about becoming a master fisherman. If you talk to him with a fishing rod equipped, he gives what appear to be instructions on how to fish and asks the player to catch a few fish and bring them to him. You can also ask him about various characters, and he will give his (fishing-related) thoughts.
Albino Rhoa Feathers
Easter EggsAlbino Rhoa Feathers are a form of currency obtained as drop from the Albino Rhoa or by opening a Perandus Tackle Box. There is currently no known use for these feathers, and it is generally believed they are part of the fishing joke.
Dark Souls reference
Easter EggsAt The Ridge, you can find a bonfire with a sword in it, most likely a nod to Dark Souls. There are also enemies that resemble the Bonewheel Skeletons from Dark Souls, among other little details.
Spartacus reference
Easter Eggs“Bringer of Rain” is a name given to Spartacus in the Spartacus TV show. Its quote in its description is also from the show:
“What lies beneath your feet?!”
“Sacred ground, watered with tears of blood!”
Touhou reference
Easter EggsThe Infernal Mantle design was inspired by Reiuji Utsoho from the Touhou series.
Song of Fire and Ice/Game of Thrones reference
Easter EggsBronn’s Lithe is a reference to Bronn from A Song of Fire and Ice/Game of Thrones.
Victoria's Secret reference
Easter EggsThe quest Victario’s Secrets, which sends you in search of several busts, might be a reference to the store Victoria’s Secret.
JoJo's Bizarre Adventure reference
Easter EggsThe quotes in the description of The Hunger were most likely inspired by an exchange in JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure. In JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure, Dio is asked “How many lives have you sucked to heal those wounds?” and he replies, “How many breads have you eaten in your life?”
The Hunger’s flavor text says:
“How many lives have you consumed?”
“How many times have you blinked?”
