You can get your gold back from Mr. Hat. After the battle in the Armor Outpost hat shop, Mr. Hat will be on top of the sign outside. Get to the roof from the airship and go to Mr. Hat. He'll give you 1,000 gold back. Go back to the airship to get another 1,000 gold back from him. Once you have the two-way catapult on the airship, go there to get the final 1,000 gold back.
