Things to Know Before Playing

Hints

Keep an Eye on Your Stamina

Your stamina bar indicates how much energy you have to sprint before letting yourself cool down. The energy bar, juice, and other items can help increase your stamina.

Watch Your Sanity Meter

The sanity meter is in your inventory, and levels will drop when you’re in danger. At 15% sanity, Smilers will start appearing around you as a warning. You can increase your Sanity Meter by drinking almond water or juice and eating energy bars or moth jelly. Remember, you will die if your sanity runs out, even if you finish eating or drinking something.

Bhopping (bunny hopping)

Bhopping is a way of sprinting and jumping without losing stamina. While sprinting around the map, hit shift just before you jump, and you will start bhopping.

Crouch Jumping

This is the act of crouching while you’re still in the air right after a jump. You can use this jump to reach spaces you might not have been able to on a regular jump.

The Benefits of the “F” Button

You can use the “F” button to pick up and interact with objects you find on various levels. You can also use it to inspect notes closer.

Dealing with Enemies

Hints

Bacteria/Howler

The howler is a tall, black, slim creature on Level 0. It spawns three minutes into the level and is relatively simple to deal with. Make sure your turn corners frequently and in as confusing a way as possible to lose it and find the exit as quickly as possible.

If you find the ladder after the three-minute mark, there’s a high chance you’ll encounter the howler while exiting the room. If this happens, run away from it in a zig-zag pattern to avoid captures.

Remember, if you hear knocking or breathing when you’re about to round a corner, turn the other way. The best way to evade the howler is to keep doors open for a quick hiding spot, hide as far back in vents as possible, peek around corners and never look back when running away.

Skin Stealer

These gray-skinned, sunken-eyed humanoid creatures are found on the second and third sections of level 1 and the second floor of level 5. Skin Stealers growl and chase players if they see them and will steal players’ skin after killing them, which can be incredibly confusing in multiplayer.

When dealing with Skin Stealers, constantly communicate with the rest of your team to avoid confusion. If you’re unsure about a player, press “C” to pull out your ID card and identify them. Though, if a player you’re not sure about is running at you, it can be safe to assume they’re a Skin Stealer in disguise.

Shut doors behind you to keep encounters to a minimum, and make sure you hide, especially on level 5, where hiding is the best option for surviving a chase.

Smilers

These spider-like creatures with white bioluminescent smiley faces will remain mostly unseen until the lights go off. They can be found on levels 1, 2 and “Run For Your Life.”

They’re faster than players, therefore, almost impossible to escape, but they won’t enter areas with light.

In level 1, you can survive the Smilers by rooming from room to room when the lights turn on, but in level 2, you just need to run without looking back and hope you reach the light before the Smilers reach you.

Hounds

These sharp-toothed, sunken-eyed creatures look like dogs with human skin and are found on levels 3 and 5.

Your flashlight will be your best friend when dealing with hounds, as you can use it to blind them for a few seconds. After you’ve blinded a hound three times, it will run away, allowing you to do some work to escape the level you’re on.

Never try to jump over and crouch around the Hounds. Getting cornered by multiple hounds is suicide, so keep your torch ready and ensure there’s a room with a door nearby for you to run into.

Death Moths

Male: These greyish moths roam around level 5 and are non-hostile. They’re a source of moth jelly, which you can get by spraying them with bug spray. Moth jelly is vital on level 5 as you need three pieces to unlock the door to the second floor, and it gives you a stamina boost.

Female: These creatures are larger versions of the male death moths and are found in the boiler room of level 5. Thankfully they won’t chase you unless you spring near them or point a flashlight at one.

There are valves hidden around level 5 that release bug spray and block the path of the female death moths, so make sure you’re aware of the location of the nearest valve, especially if activating a chase is inevitable.

You can use a thermometer to track them. At 72 degrees, there are no moths near you. If the thermometer hits 125 degrees, it means there’s a female death moth nearby, and if it hits 140 degrees, you’re very close to their nest and should backtrack if possible. If you wander into a give, the thermometer will hit 788 degrees.

You can use the moth jelly collected from the male death moths to give yourself a temporary speed boost and evade the female death moths if they start chasing you.

Partygoers

These yellow-skinned humanoid creatures covered in blood can usually be seen holding a balloon. Walking, sprinting, or crouching in front of one will trigger a chase sequence that will send all the nearby partygoers to you.

The only way to avoid them is by hiding under a table. Popping balloons around a level will draw partygoers to that location and keep them from seeing you. This is incredibly helpful, as they don’t turn aggressive if you shift behind them. Keep note of all the tables and balloons around you, and make sure you don’t trigger a chase sequence without being aware of the nearest hiding place.

The Scratcher

This grey-skinned, red-eyed creature can be seen roaming around “The End” and making shushing noises. It will get aggressive if you walk, sprint, or pick up tape near it. The scratcher is blind but has incredible hearing and will start chasing you if you make the tiniest noise.

If a chase begins, it can only be stopped if you die or get under one of two tables in “The End.” Fortunately, the Scratcher can also be distracted by the two fire alarms, which you can trigger to distract it.

Stay as far away from the Scratcher as possible, but keep your eyes on it so you’re aware of its location. If it gets close to you, crouch and get close to a wall. Don’t use the in-game chat if you’re anywhere near it.

Animations

These wooden creatures are found on level 94 and are much faster than the player. They only come outside at night and will kill you if they spot you outside, if you're in a house with the lights on, or if you don’t hide in a bed or closet. They hunt in groups and swarm until morning.

Animated King

This plastic clown can be found on level 94 and won’t do anything until you look away from him. When he disappears, the lights will turn off, and a timer will begin counting to 100. He can only attack you from behind to ensure you’re constantly looking around. Once the 100 seconds pass, you will hear a honk sound and can ride the roller coaster to leave the level.

Wretch

These skin-less humanoid creators are found in level 6 and walk around in the dark, waiting for players to walk to sprint near them. A LiDar Scanner will help you locate Wretch. You can sneak-walk to keep Wretches from seeing you.

The Neighborhood Watch

This giant eye with four legs is found on level 9 and patrols the streets in a set path until it spots you, after which it will chase you until you’re dead, or you hide in a house and wait for it to leave. Thankfully, it has loud footsteps, so you’ll hear one approaching before it sees you, giving you time to hide. Bushes can make great makeshift hiding spots.

Ensure you don’t encounter any Wretches because if one chases you outside while the Neighborhood Watch is outside the house, that can mean a near-instant game over.
