Town Merchant Tenets

Starting in a town means you can stay as long as you want without worrying about your products going off.

  • A person’s profession will determine what they will sell to you cheaply (supply) and what they need to buy (demand). Some characters may have specific needs, and they’ll pay extra if you manage to provide them with their items.
  • Other merchants in the world are also seeking profits, but while they might not part with their money in fair deals, they do value coin.
  • The world cycles through different seasons, which impacts the supply and demand of your items. Keep an ear out when people start talking about these seasonal changes.
  • The value of different items will fluctuate, so you should keep an eye on the things you want to keep a record of different items’ value. People have various values for products and coin, meaning there’s no standard coin conversion in most cases. As you compile more and more records, you’ll start to develop a sense of the conversions.
  • It’s not always easy to deal with unique items like magical equipment, especially when trying to pinpoint their exact value. Rather than acquiring them from intermediaries, go directly to the source.

Traveling Merchant Tenets

Traveling to different markets means you’ll gain new chances, but it also means you’ll have a few extra expenses. To explore the different opportunities, you’ll need to map different areas at least once.

  • Towns have a similar influence on the supply and demand of your product as professions do. Certain towns might have an abundant supply of specific products, meaning you can buy there and move elsewhere without having excess stock to sell.
  • Certain products are native to specific regions, meaning they're more valuable when sold outside of that region. Other products are prohibited in certain regions, which means you can make a decent profit on them if you can find trustworthy trading partners that won’t rat you out to the guards.
  • Traders have specific towns that they visit, often frequenting some more than others. If there are specific traders you want to buy from, your best hope is to memorize their route.
  • Remember, moving between towns means three types of expenses:
    • Traveling costs - The cost of moving from one town to another. These depend on the distance between towns and the number of horses you have to transport your goods.
    • Taxes - When you enter certain towns, you’ll have to pay taxes. These increase with the amount of coinage you’re carrying. Fellow traveling merchants may offer some insight into how to reduce your tax burden.
    • Guild Fees - Fixed fees associated with their rich merchant guild presence.
  • Each town may have a quest you will need to complete, which can present some interesting opportunities and challenges.

General

  • Other merchants can be an excellent source for acquiring specific items when you have some coin to spare. They’re beneficial if you enter a town and have gaps in your inventory and no other way to fill them.
  • People who usually have money to spare include nobility, specific knights or soldiers, and adventurous souls. Between these three, you can sell all your merchandise (except monster parts) without worrying about a bad deal.
  • While Ascension is the largest trading hub, it isn’t anywhere close to the best. It lacks certain producers, and the taxes and fees are ridiculous. It’s better to travel to towns that have plenty of farmers and miners to interact with.

We recommend doing this quest before grinding for items, as all your hard work will amount to nothing.
