Hollywood References
Given that the game is set in Hollywood, it makes sense that there are many movie-related references. Here are some of the most notable:
- George Romero - Romero is a movie director widely considered the father of the zombie genre. In honor of him, the game’s Oscars are called the Romeros, and the awards are golden zombie hands, which are so valued that in one mission, you are sent to find one for one of the stars you meet on your journey around the island. The game’s final mission also occurs in the ruins of a Romero awards ceremony.
- Dario Argento - Argento is another popular horror director famous for creating films like Suspiria and Tenebre. He also served as a script consultant and soundtrack composer for Romero’s Dawn of the Dead. If you head to Sterling Hotel in Ocean Avenue, you’ll probably stumble upon a bar named the Argento Sky Lounge in honor of the director.
The Walk of Fame
If you head over to Hollywood Boulevard and check out the stars on the Walk of Fame, you’ll find the names of many of the game’s voice actors.
Arcade Game Tributes
If you head over to the Funland arcade and look around, you will probably find a Homefront the Revolution arcade game; this is about the developers' previous title and sparks a portion of dialogue that will encourage you to look for a Timesplitters machine. If you stand next to a TImespitter machine after turning it on, you’ll be treated to a wonderful rendition of the theme song. Unfortunately, neither of these is playable.
Talking Zombies
Zombie talk usually consists of inarticulate grunts as they try to kill you, but this game features a zombie type that speaks just before it dies: Bursters. Just before they explode, you can hear them saying “Sorry” or “Bye, bye.”
