Unlocking Tech: Research, Blueprints, and Schools

Déverrouillables

Progress in Whiskerwood is gated by research, planks, and a bit of clever overpaying.

How research works

Tech is tiered and plank-hungry. You can unlock buildings within a tier independently.

You’ll need a Research Lab staffed by an educated Whisker to make progress.

What tech unlocks

Key buildings (like Charcoal Furnaces, Organized Heating, and specialty production) sit behind research walls, so expect a simpler base until you invest.

Blueprints from taxes

  • Overpaying taxes can drop blueprints:
  • 125%: chance at a blueprint (often one reward slot).
  • 150%: guaranteed blueprint, with higher tiers offering more.

Great for shortcutting to buildings before you’ve researched them.

School your workforce

Build Schools to educate and shift Guilds or rank up to Apprentice/Craftsmaster. Craftsmasters are required for Schools and Research Labs. Education boosts output but raises quality-of-life expectations, so upgrade housing and meals accordingly.

Bugs to Watch For (and What’s Been Patched)

Glitch

A few rough edges you might run into, plus what’s already been fixed.

  • Miners stuck in climbing: Previously looked frozen due to a long idle animation. Fixed in a recent patch.
  • Bonfire timers not saving: Fuel duration can desync. Hover to check burn time and rebuild early if you suspect a bad save.
  • Explorer slowdown on dirt: Movement penalty on open dirt got addressed in Patch #5.
  • Construction crash on death: Crash could occur if a Whisker died en route to build; fixed.
  • Overtime toggle bug: Older saves needed two clicks to enable overtime; patched.
  • Phantom idle warnings: Earthworks Camps may flash incorrect idle alerts. They should clear after razing or reassigning staff.

If something feels off, try rebuilding the building or reassigning workers to refresh its state, and keep your game updated.

Kickstart Your Colony: Early-Game Flow and Smart Storage

Indices

Getting off the ground in Whiskerwood is all about picking the right crew, placing smart, and not freezing to death on day three.

Your first five Whiskers

  • Reroll your starting team until you get a good Guild mix: Explorer, Miner, Farmer, Engineer.
  • Traits matter. Apprentice Farmer is a clutch early pickup.
  • Educated Whiskers are stronger but fussier—bigger housing and food expectations. Plan for the upkeep.

Map placement that pays off

Drop your Export Dock where trees and berry bushes are dense. Early trade + easy food = less scrambling.

Job assignments

  • Keep Whiskers in their Guild specialty. A Farmer in a mine is basically decorative.
  • Some traits bend the rules—skim individual stats before locking things in.

Build up, not out

Space is tight. Go vertical with stairs, ramps, slides. Early mobility pieces beat most fancy buildings.

Taxes without tears

  • Taxes hit every 3 days. Underpay = Trust down. Exact = neutral.
  • Overpaying to 125% is the sweet spot: two reward gifts that outvalue hoarded wood/food. Prioritize metals for shipment.

Surviving winter

  • Tap H for the heat overlay. Place Campfires early; research Organized Heating by your second winter to avoid a body count.
  • Keep fields and work sites near heat so workers don’t hike home to thaw every five minutes.

Storage that doesn’t clog

Your main warehouse fills fast with non-tax junk. Build small local warehouses near production to keep logistics smooth and tax prep clean.

Visibility and cleanup

Press Z for slice view to scout hidden ore one layer down. Hold B to bulldoze temporary scaffolds and get some materials back.

Smarter Mining: Finding Veins and What to Ship

Indices

Mining right saves you days of busywork.

Finding the good stuff

Surface nodes dry up quickly. Use slice view (Z) to reveal ore one layer down and plan your tunnels around thick veins.

What to prioritize

  • Early on, raw ore is great for taxes—ship it.
  • Later, pivot some effort to cotton once your farms can stay warm; it’s equal in value to iron ore and endlessly renewable.
  • Fishing shines with Apprentices; it’s a steady way to bulk up food while miners do the heavy lifting.

Beat the Freeze: Heating Without the Headaches

Indices

Winter kills unprepared colonies, and Campfires can nuke morale if you overdo it.

Campfires: necessary evil

  • They heat, but they pollute, stacking mood penalties—even outdoors. Spread them out and use sparingly.

Graduate to clean heat

Research Charcoal Furnaces, then Organized Heating. Once those are online, you can remove Campfires and ditch the pollution debuff.

Keep workers warm on the job

Outdoor tasks bleed body heat. Place fields, mines, and work sites near heat sources so Whiskers don’t trek back and forth to thaw.

How to Hit 233 Whiskers Fast (Nation Achievement)

Guides

Want the Nation achievement? You need 233+ Whiskers, steady supply lines, and approval management that doesn’t wobble when snow falls.

Early game (stability first)

  • Lock in reliable food and base workforce. Keep approval healthy to start banking Approval Scrolls.
  • Recruit from ship events using scrolls; don’t rush growth faster than you can feed and heat.

Mid game (scale smart)

  • Research better production and logistics so you can pump out trade surplus for rewards.
  • Keep tax overpayments at efficient tiers to farm blueprints and supplies.

Late game (the big city)

  • As population balloons, stay ahead on housing, heating, food variety, and taxes.
  • Approval fuels recruitment. If it dips, pause growth and fix pain points (pollution, cold spots, shortages).

Pro tips

  • Aim for recruitment cycles after you’ve stockpiled winter fuel and food.
  • Use specialized Whiskers and schools to slot Craftsmasters where they matter most.
