The Cheats That Actually Matter
SchummelnWant to mess around with the full toybox? Dungeon Keeper’s got some built-in goodies plus a few power-user tricks.
Main Menu Mega-Unlock
- Please Give All — Type this at the main menu to unlock every creature, room, trap, and spell. Great for sandboxing builds.
In-game Cheat Prompt
- Press Enter during play to bring up the cheat entry line, then type:
- give me money — Infinite gold.
- i love to die — God mode for your whole operation.
- extra levels — Unlocks all campaign stages.
- research now — Instantly completes all research.
- creatures 2000 — Drops five of every creature available in that level.
Programmer Greetings (just for laughs)
- Hold Left Shift and type:
- FECKOFF
- SKEKSIS
- JLW — Requires launching the game with -alex and holding both Shift keys.
Edit-the-files Route (back up first!)
- Go to the game’s data folder and open creature.txt (remove read-only, and make a backup).
- Set creature cost values to 0 to recruit for free.
- For spells, find entries like MAGIC_CREATE_IMP and set the numbers to 0 to remove costs.
- Boost economy by setting GAME_GOLD_PER_GOLD_BLOCK to something wild like 9999.
- Don’t touch sections marked “do not change.”
Multiplayer Money Tweaks
- In a level file (e.g., level75.txt), swap:
- [ALL_PLAYERS_MONEY, 10000]
- For player-specific values like:
- [PLAYER0_MONEY, 9999999]
Only affects the edited MP map.
Trainer Tools
- Prefer sliders over text files? Tools like Cheat Engine or WeMod let you toggle things like infinite mana, max health, or instant levels in real time.
Make Your Dungeon Immortal (Sort Of)
SchummelnThis exploit abuses possession and the game’s rules for “alive” dungeons.
How to pull it off
- Possess a human unit (the Avatar on the final level is ideal).
- March to your Dungeon Heart and destroy it while possessed.
- Exit possession, then pick up every creature and drop them outside your portal so they don’t jump back in and vanish.
- Let your imps die and lose all ground except your existing rooms.
At this point, your dungeon is functionally immortal because your rooms aren’t linked to a heart anymore, so enemy Keepers can’t finish you off. It’s finicky and version-dependent, and works best on the final mission. Expect weirdness.
Dev Birthday Messages You Can Trigger
OstereierSet your PC clock, start a new game, watch the intro, and you’ll see a birthday card pop up for specific team members.
Dates that work
- May 3 — Simon Carter
- May 5 — Peter Molyneux
- January 13 — Mark Healey
- March 21 — Jonty Barnes
- November 13 — Alex Peters
- December 1 — Dene Carter
The Printer Fax Gag You Probably Never Saw
OstereierYes, Dungeon Keeper can literally print you a message.
How to trigger
- Plug in and power on a printer.
- Play to Level 5 (Lushmeadow-on-Down) or Level 7.
- The game will fire off a fax-style print from your rival Keeper. Peak ’90s nonsense and still hilarious.
The “My Creatures Aren’t Attacking” Bug
FehlerSometimes units animate an attack or spell, but nothing happens. Mana gets spent, no damage lands—infuriating.
When it shows up
- Rapid orders, many units focusing one target, or heavy pathfinding load seems to increase odds.
Quick fixes
- Reassign the creature to another task, then back to combat.
- Unpossess/repossess to flush their action queue.
- A quick slap can also reset behavior.
Best fix
- Community patch KeeperFX reduces this significantly.
Whirlwind Your Way Through Walls
FehlerThere’s a long-standing collision quirk you can abuse to slip past walls.
You’ll need
- A Warlock level 8+ (or any creature with Whirlwind).
- A room corner with a missing block—two diagonals touching with a gap in the corner.
How to do it
- Stand exactly in that corner crack.
- Cast Whirlwind to knock yourself through the wall to the other side.
Why it’s useful
- Sneak into treasuries or heart chambers without opening a new entrance.
- It’s fiddly and unreliable—don’t hinge a whole attack on it.
Occasionally the sidebar pickup just… stops working.
What you’ll see
- Clicking a unit portrait doesn’t grab them with the Hand of Evil, often affecting starting units or specific spots.
Workarounds
- Save/reload.
- Click the creature in the world first, then try picking it up.
- Rarely, it persists across saves—try a different save slot.
Related oddity
- Imps sometimes cost a bizarre 38,400 gold due to cost calculation hiccups.
Training Room Mentor Bonus Not Applying
FehlerNewbies should gain extra XP when a high-level unit trains alongside them, but sometimes the guild bonus just doesn’t trigger.
What should happen
- Lower-level creatures in the same Training Room as a master should level faster.
What actually happens
- Occasionally it’s normal speed, with the bonus missing entirely.
How to deal with it
- The original game is flaky here. The KeeperFX mod fixes it, along with a bunch of other bugs.
Temple Sacrifices That Are Actually Worth It
HinweiseThe Temple isn’t just decor—it’s a bargaining table with the gods.
Summon the Horned Reaper
- Sacrifice Dark Mistress + Bile Demon + Troll together.
- You’ll hear “the gods have rewarded your offering!” and get your Reaper.
- Keep it happy: pay on time, keep it busy, and don’t let morale tank or it’ll go berserk on anything that moves.
Morale management
- Sacrificing boosts global happiness—perfect when your army’s grumbling about pay or sleep.
Special combo
- Two Bile Demons sacrificed can apply a dungeon-wide protection-style effect vs. enemy Keeper spells unless hit directly.
When to sacrifice
- Early: Ditch unwanted recruits.
- Mid: Thin the roster when space is tight.
- Late: Targeted rituals (like the Reaper) to punch through hard missions.
Free Passive Leveling Tricks
HinweiseThere are slow but free ways to beef up units while your economy grows.
Element-adjacent lairs
- Warlocks: Gain a trickle of XP while sleeping near a magical source.
- Dragons: Lair next to lava for passive leveling.
- Tentacles: Lair beside water to gradually level up.
Timing tips
- Set these up early so units hit level 3–5 before the fighting starts.
- Switch to paid Training later to finish the climb fast.
Layout Tips That Make Your Dungeon Hum
HinweiseGood layout equals fewer headaches and faster progress.
Build a central hub
- Put your Hatchery and Treasury in the middle. Wrap high-traffic rooms (Training, Workshop, Library) around them to cut travel time.
Handle gold smartly
- Dig out nearby seams before you place your main Treasury.
- Drop a small Treasury near early seams, then relocate to a bigger central vault once income stabilizes.
Keep paths clean
- Use 2–3 tile-wide corridors. Creatures won’t body-block each other, and your logistics stay smooth.
Isolate sacred rooms
- Keep Temple and Graveyard off the main highways so worshippers and recuperating units don’t clog worker routes.
Defend the chokepoints
- Stack Guard Posts and traps where attackers funnel in. Make them walk through your kill box.
How to Keep Creatures Happy Without Going Broke
HinweiseYou don’t have to shower everyone with gold if you run a tight ship.
Pay vs. productivity
- You can underpay a bit if you keep creatures busy. Constant training/research/manufacturing keeps morale passable at lower wages.
Comfort basics
- Make sure everyone has lair space and access to the Hatchery. Hunger and no bed = instant sour moods.
Stop rebellions early
- Watch for slow shuffles, clumping, and idling.
- Use Hold Audience to regroup and stabilize morale.
- VIPs like the Horned Reaper need above-average happiness—don’t risk a rampage.
Assign by preference
- Fighters like fighting, scholars like research, etc. Keep them doing what they enjoy to maintain morale.
