PS4 Display Optimization – When to Enable RGB Full Range

February 3, 2014 by Staff - 1 Comment

If you’ve taken a look at the PS4’s display options and noticed that you have the option to “Enable RGB Full Range,” you might be confused about whether or not to should enable it. Read on, and we’ll try to shed some light on this issue.

Many people will say you should always enable RGB Full Range, but this is not necessarily the case. It’s true that if your HDTV supports it, and can display the full range of colors from 0 to 255, your overall picture quality will improve, but if your TV does not support it, you’ll be left with oversaturated colors and a lack of graphical detail in darker areas.

Unlike computer monitors, which almost always support the full range of RGB color, many TVs only display 16 (Black) to 235 (White). To find out whether or not you should enable RGB Full Range, use your PS4’s Internet browser to download this image:

(many thanks to ch3rokee for the image!)

Once the image is saved on your console, enable RGB Full Range and take a look. If you can see at least 26 of the 28 squares (do not worry too much if you can’t see the first two squares), you can leave Full Range enabled. If you can’t, we suggest you first try to increase the brightness of your TV. If you still can’t see at least 26 of the squares, your TV does not support Full Range.

Sony unveils official blue and red PS4 controllers

European gamers might be getting the Playstation 4 two weeks after their North American counterparts, but they are getting these two new DualShock 4 controller color variations first…

Today Sony revealed the new controller colors – “Magma Red” and “Wave Blue” and said that they’ll be available upon the launch of the PS4 in Europe on November 29 with a RRP of €59 / £54. The controllers will also become available in North and Latin America later this year.

Sony says that the colors represent “two of the most popular colors among PlayStation users” so they must have done their research. What do you think of the look?
