Sunset Overdrive: Customization, Traps, and More

We’ve talked a lot about Sunset Overdrive, but we’ve mainly focused on the weapons, colorful world (which was inspired by Jet Grind Radio), and all-around craziness. One thing we haven’t discussed in very much detail is the playable character. There’s a reason for that–you won’t be playing as the guy in the cover art or in the trailers. You’re the hero of Sunset Overdrive, and you can customize your character.

Several character screenshots have been released, and customization was also covered in SunsetTV. While Insomniac’s Brandon Winfrey discusses the wide variety of options available to you, the video displays a character dressed in rather familiar garb… not that we think Insomniac is taking a jab at a certain game, or anything, but Sunset Overdrive has female assassins.

This episode also covers some of the traps you can use in Sunset Overdrive, such as the fiery Pyro Geyser and the mysterious Pandora’s Trap. The traps all fit the themes we’ve seen from the game so far. Pandora’s Trap, for example, may assault your enemies with swearing gnomes.

And since this is Sunset Overdrive, not even the character respawns are dull and ordinary. Insomniac talked to Examiner about some of the games and other media the respawns reference. One is a reference to The Ring, another to Men in Black, another to Portal, and so on… It should be fun to see them all.

Sunset Overdrive looks like a lot of fun so far, and if it’s successful, the fun should continue for years to come. Insomniac already has ideas for sequels and spin-off games. Enjoy the final customization images, and share your impressions of this wild game.
