While the Twitch app will be available on the Xbox One when it launches this Friday, you won’t be able to stream your gameplay like your PS4-owning counterparts. That particular feature is arriving “during the first part of 2014”, Microsoft hopes.

We know that the ability to broadcast your Xbox One gameplay direct to Twitch is something you’re all very excited about. So are we! Microsoft is working hard to ensure that the Twitch broadcasting experience meets all of your expectations, and we’re looking forward to sharing more details with you all in the future.

What will be enabled and fully available for use however is the Xbox One’s DVR (digital video recording) functionality. With it, you can capture either the last 30 seconds of gameplay, the last five minutes of gameplay, or the next five minutes of gameplay. Once the video has been saved it is then presented in the Xbox One’s “Upload Studio” where you can edit it as shown in the video below.

Once that’s done, you can then upload the video to Microsoft’s cloud storage service “Skydrive” where it can be shared publicly. Of course you can also download it from Skydrive using your PC and then re-upload it to whatever service you want (like Youtube or Facebook). Oh, and you’ll need a Xbox Live Gold subscription to make use of the Skydrive – we can’t forget that part….

PS: You can earn Achievements via apps on the Xbox One. Here’s what’s up for grabs simply by using the Twitch app:

  • Newcomer: Watch one hour of live video on Twitch
  • Competitive: Watch 10 hours of live video on Twitch
  • Best Viewer: Watch 100 hours of live video on Twitch
  • Hipster: Watch one hour of live video on Twitch channels that have less than 10 viewers
  • Talent Scout: Watch 10 hours of live video on Twitch channels that have less than 10 viewers
  • Max Bandwith: Watch a single channel on Twitch for more than eight hours consecutively
  • Around the Clock: Watch at least one minute of live video on Twitch in each hour of a full day
  • Prime Time: Watch a total of 10 hours of live video on Twitch between peak viewing hours from 7:30 to 11:30PM, on a weekday
