In addition to the main endings, there is also a secret joke ending. To get the joke ending, you must locate an NPC brigand in Fallgrim called Baghead, who does not attack you. As you talk to him, he will eventually ask you for a roasted rat. If you give it to him and continue to talk to him, he will ask for superior moonshine. If you give him that and then talk to him again, he will invite you to hang out with him forever. Accepting his offer will lead to the joke ending.
Note: since this is not a “real” ending, you will be able to load your save from before the cinematic and continue playing normally.
Beating the first boss won’t change how the story goes, but you will earn a trophy/achievement and also get a bonus Glimpse of Reverie.
The lute is an item used to draw enemies toward you. However, if you play the lute near Sester Genessa, she will react to the music.
There is a secret hard mode accessed by finding a special altar in Fallgrim in which you are asked to renounce your shells. Renouncing your shells renders shells permanently unusable for your playthrough and gives you a new form called Obsidian Dark Form. This also makes it possible to get three different trophies/achievements, one for renouncing your shells, one for beating the game with Obsidian Dark Form, and one for beating the game without ever using a shell (if you get Obsidian Dark Form at the start of the game).
Shells are essentially this game’s form of classes, but instead of picking one at the start, you will get new shells as you play. You will need to find a shell in the world and then take it to Sester Genessa to discover its name and therefore unlock its abilities. The available shells are:
To learn how to unlock the first four shells, see the video guide below. The fifth shell (Hadern, the Deliverer) is only available with the DLC content The Virtuous Cycle, and can be found on the second floor of Fallgrim Tower after you’ve collected all four weapons. Hadern can use any one ability from each of the other Shells, at an additional resource cost.
If you enable seasonal events, you will be able to participate in the Rotten Autumn free update content, which also includes new colors for your different forms, known as Shades. There are two Shades for each shell and two for your Foundling form without a shell, for a total of 10 Shades. To unlock Shades, you need to feed items to a large froglike creature called Gorf and then play your lute.
There is a pattern to follow to unlock Shades. For each shell’s first Shade, feed Gorf 5 Roasted Rats and then play the lute. For each shell’s second Shade, feed him either 10 Roasted Rats, 4 Rotten Food, or 1 Rotten Gourd, and then play the lute.
Fallgrim essentially acts as a hub. Visit Fallgrim Tower early on to learn what it has to offer and get a better picture of what you should be doing.
Pay attention to enemy patterns. All attacks have tells, so learn what signals an attack and respond accordingly.
Hardening lets you block enemy attacks. It will also help you buy a little time to let your stamina replenish.
You also can parry attacks to regain a little health, but the window is small. Try to parry enemies that have clearly telegraphed attacks to help you time it right.
Proceed slowly and cautiously. Running in can easily lead to death, so take things slowly and pay attention to your surroundings.
When you run out of health, you will be ejected from your shell. You can then reclaim your shell, but dying a second time will cause you to respawn. However, you can also force an ejection yourself with the Tainted Nektar item. This doesn’t count the same as the automatic ejection, so you can retrieve your shell to heal and still be able to eject if you run out of health.
Searching for new shells should be one of your first goals. Having all shells available to you will let you try out different playstyles and accustom yourself to each one.
Upgrade your shells when you can, and try to focus on the one you intend to use the most to get it fully upgraded sooner rather than later.
Every time you use an item, your Familiarity with it increases. Familiarity unlocks new effects, so you should use items often. Sometimes, items even start with negative effects but gain beneficial effects instead once your Familiarity is higher.
If you play the flute while next to the cat at the shop keeper the cat will move his head as if enjoying the sound
