Books That Will Trigger Quests

Guides

There are a lot of books in Skyrim. Most (basically all) contain lore of the world, others will level up your skills, and some will even give you access to hidden quests.

The Aetherium Wars will trigger “Lost to the Ages,” during which you’ll need to retrieve the four Aetherium Shards to build the Aethrial Crown, Aetherial Shield, or Aetherial Staff. You’ll find this book in the Arcanaeum, the Bard College, Calcemo’s Tower, the Darklight Tower, the Dayspring Canyon, the Dead Drop Mine, Dragonsreach, the Dwemer Museum, the Fellglow Keep, the ground floor of Fort Dawguard (on a shelf in the farthest room to your left as you enter, on a shelf in the farthest room in front of the main entrance), Fort Neugard, Fort Snowhawk, the Hall of the Vigilant, Hob’s Fall Cave, the Ilinalta’s Deep, upstairs in the Palace of the Kings, Raldbthar, Rannveig’s Fast, the Redwater Den, Ruunvald Temple, the Volkihar Keep (in the blacksmith’s workroom and on the balcony extending from the upper level of the library), the Volkihar Undercroft.

  • Boethiah’s Proving will trigger “Boethiah’s Calling,” during which you’ll have to kill a non-essential follower, all the followers of Boethiah and Boethiah’s Champion. You’ll find the book in the Abandoned House, the Fellglow Keep, Hob’s Fall Cave, Septimus Signus’s Outpost, or on any Boethiah cultist who attacks you.
  • The Legend of Red Eagle will trigger “Find Red Eagle’s Sword,” during which you’ll have to retrieve Red Eagle’s Fury (sword), kill Red Eagle, and retrieve Red Eagle’s Bane. You’ll find this book in an Abandoned Prison in Eastmarch, Anga’s Mill Common House, Angeline’s Aromatics in Solitude, the Bard’s College, Candlehearth Hall, Castle Dour, the Arcanaeum of the College of Winterhold, the Dawnstar Sanctuary, Deepwood Redoubt (on a table near the only arcane enchanter, on a table in the forsworn hut containing a double bed, and on a bookshelf near the only bed in the dungeon), Dragonsreach (on a bookshelf in Farengar’s study and in the Jarl’s Quaters), Dushnikh Yal, Faldar’s Tooth, the Fellglow Keep Dungeons, the Commander’s Quarters in Fort Dunstad, Fort Snowhawk, the Frostflow Lighthouse, Hag’s End, the House of Clan Cruel-Sea, the Jarl’s Longhouse in Falkreath Hold, Jorrvaskr Living Quaters, The Katariah, the Jarl’s Chambers in Mistveil Keep, Upstairs in the Palace of the Kings, the Pinewatch Bandit’s Sanctuary, Rebel’s Cairn, Red Eagle Redoubt, Riften Jail, Serpent’s Bluff Redoubt, Serpent’s Bluff Ruins, the Silver-Blood Inn, the Understone Keep, Viola Giordano’s House, and the Volkihar Keep.
  • Lost Legends will trigger “Forbidden Legend,” during which you’ll need to learn the truth of the legend and find three parts of an amulet before reforging it in Reachwater Rock. This book is found in the College of Winterhold, the Nightcaller Temple, Geirmund’s Hall, Fellglow Keep, Dragonsreach, the Thalmor Embassy, the Understone Keep, or the Dark Brotherhood Sanctuary.
  • Sinderion’s Field Journal will trigger “A Return to Your Roots,” during which you’ll need to collect 30 samples of the mysterious Crimson Nirnroot and take them to Sinderion’s colleague Avrusa Sarethis so his research can continue. You’ll find the journal on Sinderion’s remains in Sinderion’s Field Laboratory.
