Cheats

While Age of Empires II does not include a built-in cheat system, there are still ways to add cheats to the game as a way to spice it up a little. Downloading and using a trainer is one of the ways you can add cheats to the game.

We suggest you read reviews on any trainer or software you add to your system, but MegaDev's all-in-one Plug'n'Play Trainer has worked for multiple users and provides a vast range of cheats to enable.

The MegaDev Trainer provides the following cheats:

  • +10 max population (up to special limit)
  • +20 special limit for max population
  • +1,000 Food
  • +1,000 Wood
  • +1,000 Stone
  • +1,000 Gold
  • Godmode
  • Mega Health
  • Instant Recruit
  • Instant Build
  • Instant Research
  • OneHitKill
  • Instant Win
  • Weak units
As a trainer may be difficult to add to the game for an inexperienced user, here is a guide that helps you add cheats for Age of Empires II.

Obi-Wan Kenobi

Easter Eggs

When the Master of the Templar is killed in The Siege of Jerusalem, he says, "If you strike me down, I will grow more powerful than you can possibly imagine"—likely a reference to the character Obi-Wan Kenobi's line in the 1977 film, Star Wars: Episode IV: Star Wars.

Furious the Monkey Boy

Easter Eggs

Furious the Monkey Boy was named after an Ensemble Studios employee's then-unborn son and used his ultrasonograph picture as a unit icon before the Definitive Edition.

Ruin of The Scourage of God

Easter Eggs

In the Scenario Editor, there is a ruin based on the Greek Age of Empires Iron Age Barracks. They have first featured in The Scourge of God scenario in the Attila the Hun campaign.

To see just how the ruin was before and after in this video along with a few other cool nods in the game.

Hotkeys

Hints

When navigating a map and choosing units or buildings, hotkeys help you save time. On a PC, using hotkeys (by default, H for the TC) to quickly accomplish the same goal saves time compared to clicking somewhere on your minimap and selecting your TC to create a villager.

You can choose livestock, villagers, the TC, or military units quickly by pressing one of the Xbox's four D-Pad buttons. To select all units in a category, hold down the same button instead of tapping it. As a result, you can easily command a particular type of unit with a few taps.

As it may be difficult to master the skill of using hotkeys - watching this video will give you proper insight so that you can master the skill.

Don't let your town center stand idle.

Hints

You'll frequently find online advice to keep your town center busy. By default, your starting structure is your town center. To progress to the next age in the game, you create new villager characters at the Town Center.

Create as many villagers as you can during the Dark Age. Take some food to the town center right away to create more if you run out. Upgrade to Loom if you are still unable to produce more villagers to make them more difficult to eliminate. Create more Villagers. The key is to keep your Town Center active at all times. It should always be working on something.

As your town centre is the most important building, it’s extremely important to utilize it properly - this video will give you the best tips to make sure this happens

Make use of trade carts

Hints

If you have allies on your team, build lots of trade carts and marketplaces to benefit from the passive gold income. Create markets as far apart as you can, and make sure to fortify trade routes against raids by appointing military units to watch over your market carts.

Don't underestimate Trash Units

Hints

A "trash unit" in Age of Empires 2 is any military unit that can be constructed without spending Gold. The three most important ones are Spearmen, Skirmishers, and Scouts, and they all have worthwhile advantages.

Spearmen can effectively combat cavalry. Archers are well-protected from skirmishers. Scouts can explore the map and have an advantage in the battle against Monks, who can turn your units against them. Trash units can be effective even if they are inexpensive. If you choose only expensive unique units, you won't get very far.

This video gives more insight into using trash units and which is the best.

Avoid Food Waste

Guides

In the Dark Age, wasting food is one of the most expensive things you can do. It's important to efficiently harvest the meat from the herdable animals you'll start the game with because they can be easily killed. Your villagers will walk to the closest location that will accept the meat once they have collected enough from an animal. To begin, this is your town center.

However, walking requires time, and during that time, the animal's carcass spoils, reducing the amount of food you can get from it.

To solve this issue, slaughter your animals right beneath the Town Center, making it easier for your villagers to deliver the meat by just standing up. Put several villagers on a single animal so that they can all share in collecting the meat at the same time.

Use your wood wisely

Guides

Farms are one way to obtain food, but it takes wood to construct them. To avoid wasting wood, place farms at the end of the chain. After your herdable animals, go on a hunt for some boars. As soon as you begin shooting arrows at them, they will run after you, so you can lead one of them back to your town center with one villager and then have your other villager attack it to kill it beneath your town center. Go after other nearby animals; you can hunt after them. After you've pursued them, seek out the berries.

If it is possible to construct a mill close to the animals and the berries, do so. Once you are in the berry phase, you can begin constructing farms.
