The story uses a style very similar to the horror stories written by H.P. Lovecraft. In particular, Daniel’s backstory has several parallels to the story “The Shadow Out of Time.”

Early on, the game mentions that Daniel lived in Mayfair, London. That is where the protagonist goes in the first Penumbra game, which is by the same developers.

There are three different endings you can get, depending on how you handle the final confrontation.

Another Ending/Nonstandard Game Over – When Alexander locks you up and tells you to let the shadow kill you, don’t try to escape.

Alexander’s Ending (Bad Ending) – Let Alexander go through the portal.

Daniel’s Ending (Revenge Ending) – As Alexander is opening the portal, push down the three pillars channeling energy to it.

Agrippa’s Ending (Good Ending) – When Alexander opens the portal, place Agrippa’s head in it.
