Character Creation

Guias

So you find yourself facing a relatively complicated set of menus to build your main character. The majority of these choices are self-explanatory, but a few are a little more challenging.

Below are some helpful explanations for a few of them.

Ability scores
Ability scores are the most important stats a character has but are also the most difficult to understand. There are 6: Strength, Dexterity, Constitution, Intelligence, Wisdom, and Charisma. These are responsible for different points of gameplay, mainly in combat, skills, saving throws, and others.

  • Strength
    • Combat: Melee weapon damage.
    • Skills: Athletics.
    • Saving Throws: when your character is restrained, shoved to lift something heavy, or takes a running jump.
    • Other: your carry weight capacity.
  • Dexterity
    • Combat: Ranged and Finesse weapon damage.
    • Skills: Acrobatics, Trickery, and Stealth.
    • Saving Throws: Reflex saves (used to avoid physical danger, i.e. dodging a fireball) and determining Initiative (used at the start of combat).
  • Constitution
    • Combat: Health/Hitpoints.
    • Saving Throws: Fortitude saves (used against skills that damage your body, i.e., resistant to poison).
  • Intelligence
    • Combat: Spell-casting ability for Wizards.
    • Skills: Knowledge (Arcana, World).
    • Other: Number of skill points when leveling up.
  • Wisdom
    • Combat: Spell-casting ability for Clerics, Druids, and Rangers.
    • Skills: Perception and Lore Skills (Nature, Medicine, Religion)
    • Saving Throws: Will saves ( used when something is trying to affect your mind, i.e., the charming bard).
  • Charisma
    • Combat: Spell-casting ability for Bards, Paladins, and Sorcerers.
    • Skills: Diplomacy, Persuasion, Performance, and certain Magic Items.
