Gangnam Style

Easter Eggs

In the “Weeping Halls” dungeon, one of the challenges relates to a particular group of skeletons. When they appear, they will begin dancing. Their dance moves and appearances are a reference to the popular Gangnam Style music video. Once you attract their attention, let them get near you and you will automatically begin to do the same dance moves. In the Xbox and PlayStation versions, this also unlocks a trophy/achievement called “Dances With Skeletons.”

Firefly references

Easter Eggs

At one point, the Voice (who seems to be fascinated with Victor’s hat) comments on the hat, saying, “Man walks down the street in that hat, people know he's not afraid of anything.” This is a quote from the episode of Firefly called “The Message.”

The game also includes a gun called Vera, another Firefly reference.

Star Wars (KotOR) reference

Easter Eggs

Five swords that resemble lightsabers are available, in a reference to Star Wars. They are called The Guardian, The Betrayer, The Master, The Sentinel, and The Consular. This is also a reference to Knights of the Old Republic, in which the three Jedi specialization classes are Jedi Guardian, Jedi Sentinel, and Jedi Consular.

Frozen reference

Easter Eggs

The Heart of Frost dungeon includes a boss named Elsa, a reference to the movie Frozen.

Tome references

Easter Eggs

Several of the tome weapons have names that reference other novels:

  • Nekonomicon – the Necronomicon, a fictional book in the works of H.P. Lovecraft
  • The King in Yellow – a collection of short stories that influence Lovecraft and is often considered part of the Cthulhu Mythos
  • The Arcanist Cookbook – Anarchist Cookbook, an infamous book written to protest the Vietnam War
  • Fifty Shades of Slay – Fifty Shades of Gray

Easter Eggs

There is a special Reaper named GebaN the Broker. If you defeat him, he will become a merchant, offering you a special promotion on his items. This is most likely a reference to Gabe Newell, the co-founder of Valve, whom fans frequently refer to as Gaben or GabeN.

Arrow in the Knee

Easter Eggs

When you first enter the Befouled Tomb, the Voice will say, “You know, I used to be a hunter like you… until I took an arrow to the knee.” This is a reference to the popular “arrow in the knee” meme from Skyrim. The Voice then laughs and says he was just joking about that.

Monty Python reference

Easter Eggs

During a battle in the Royal Crypt, the Voice will begin singing part of the song Brave Sir Robin from the film Monty Python and the Holy Grail, replacing the name “Robin” with “Victor.”

Romeo and Juliet reference

Easter Eggs

After Victor defeats Juliet the Spider, the Voice says that death is the tragic conclusion of a love story, referencing Romeo and Juliet.

Easter Eggs

The Voice suggests Victor use the name “Hatman,” a reference to Batman as well as part of the Voice’s fascination with Victor’s hat.

Portal reference

Easter Eggs

In one level, the Voice promises you a pie as a reward and says it’s not a lie. This is most likely a reference to the game Portal and its popular meme “the cake is a lie.”

The Stanley Parable reference

Easter Eggs

In the Royal Crypt, the Voice begins part of his narration by saying, “Moving on, Stanley—I mean, Victor” apparently mistakenly calling the main character Stanley. This is a reference to the game The Stanley Parable, as well as a nod to how similar the Voice’s style and delivery of lines is to the narrator in The Stanley Parable.

Halloween Level

If you eat a piece of Pumpkin Pie, you will enter the special Halloween level, in which you face off against a malevolent pumpkin called the PumpKing (which is a play on the word Pumpkin and might also double as a reference to The Nightmare Before Christmas, where Jack Skellington is referred to as the Pumpkin King).

Ghostbusters reference

Easter Eggs

The Ghostbuster lightning gun is a reference to the Ghostbusters franchise.

Secret Recipes

Several secret recipes are available through transmutation:

  • “The Master” sword – another lightsaber sword + 1 red dye + 1 blue dye
  • Greater Med Kit – 3 med kits
  • Superior Med Kit – 3 greater med kits
  • Uncommon gift box – 3 common gift boxes
  • Rare gift box – 3 uncommon gift boxes
  • Legendary gift box – 3 rare gift boxes OR 3 Lucky Rabbit’s Foot
  • Random destiny card – 3 different “The Fool” cards

Basic Tips

Take gift boxes as your reward when you level up. They are usually the best option available.

Test out your moves and new powers against the Target Dummies. It’s a good way to practice before you put yourself in danger.

Your equipped outfit will determine how you gain overdrive, what passive abilities you have, and what your defense is like. You must always have an outfit equipped. There are a total of 11 possible outfits.

Destiny cards provide you with special buffs and attributes when you equip them. Each card has a specific main attribute, as well as the chance for a random additional effect. To equip a card, you will need both an empty destiny slot and enough destiny points for the card in question.

You unlock new slots and gain more destiny points as you level up.

Transmutation lets you craft and improve items.
