Cultural References Hidden Around the Map

Glitches

Galaxy Quest

When you enter The Frozen Hearth for the first time, you’ll hear a conversation between Dagur and Nelecar, during which one of the mage’s experiments is described as smelling “like some horrible monster was turned inside out, and then exploded.”

This refers to the fate suffered by the alien creature that uses the untested “digital conveyor” in the film Galaxy Quest.

The Legend of King Arthur

A few references to King Arthur and Excalibur are scattered throughout the game.

If you head to Rebel’s Cairn (a spot directly south of Broken Tower Redoubt), you’ll find a pile of stones in front of a cave, and stabbed into the topmost stone is a steel sword. This is an obvious reference to the famed sword in the stone, Excalibur.

When traveling slightly northeast of Bleakwind Basin, you’ll come across a pond with a skeletal arm sticking out and holding a leveled sword. This is a reference to the Lady in the Lake. She’s also referenced through The Lady Stone, a standing stone that increases your Health and Stamina regeneration by 25%, found in the middle of a lake.

Star Wars

When you enter the Frostfruit Inn, you’ll overhear a conversation eerily similar to the one Uncle Owen has with Luke Skywalker in A New Hope. Erik is talking to his father, who will say, “All I ask is that you stay on for one more season,” and “That’s just your mother’s side in you.”

There’s another reference to Luke in Bleakcoast Cave (located in Eastern Winterhold). You’ll find a skeleton hanging upside down from the ceiling and, just below it, a glowing sword. Any Star Wars fan will recognize this as the scene where Luke Skywalker is trapped in the Wampa cave trying to get his lightsaber back in The Empire Strikes Back.

Finally, if you travel with the ghost of Lucien Lachance, he will sometimes say, “I feel a disturbance in the void,” a sure reference to the common phrase of every Force wielder, “I feel a disturbance in the Force.”

Over-Encumbered Fast Travel Glitch

Glitches

After diving through a dungeon, it’s very easy to come out of it over-encumbered, meaning you either have to play an annoying game of “which items are least important to me” or travel at a snail’s pace until you reach a spot where you can dump all your items.

Horses will make your life way easier. They’re unaffected by the weight you carry, meaning your over-encumberedness is canceled out, meaning you can fast-travel to your nearest base. There will only be an issue of the base you decide to fast-travel to happens to be inside one of the cities.

Max Sneak Glitch

Glitches

Sneaking is one of the most beneficial skills in the game, especially if you prefer a more stealthy playthrough. This glitch only requires a bit of patience, as it takes about 30 minutes.

Before you begin:

  1. Ensure the Thief Stone is activated to level up Sneak even faster.
  2. Grab an iron dagger and head to High Hrothgar, home of the greybeards. When you enter, a graybeard should be knelt in the center of the room.
  3. Make sure your difficulty settings are on Legendary, move behind the graybeard, crouch, and quick save the game.

Once completely hidden, slash the monk with the iron dagger and wait. After attacking, the game will inform you that you’ve been detected but remain crouched, and you’ll be hidden almost immediately. After each (or every other) slash, you’ll level up, and the chance of being detected will decrease.

Make sure you save every few levels so that if you’re caught and the graybeards bear down on you with all their strength, you won’t have to start from the beginning. Remember that with each slash, you’ll push the graybeard closer and closer to the wall, and once he hits it, he’ll turn around. Be sure not to get caught mid-swing.

Carry on slashing the graybeard until you’ve hit level 100.
