When it comes to unlocking a chest, you will either have to throw your axe at certain objects to activate the symbol on them or you will have to ignite a fire pit. 

Always check the runic symbols listed at the base of the chest you are trying to open, and then hit the objects in the same order as on the chest. The objects are sometimes very easy to find, and other times they require you to do a little searching.
