Beginners Guide

Hints

This real-time strategy city-building game requires players to build a strong economy, construct roads and buildings, enforce rigorous defenses, and build an army.

Older games in the series focused on securing food for citizens and building up an economy, while this one introduced new aspects such as coal and iron deposits. These resources directly impact a player's ability to create weapons and build an army.

Several game modes are available, including 10+ hours of campaign mode and Skirmish mode. In Skirmish mode, you can play in a live battle against AI-generated enemies or up to eight players.

At the start of every new game in Skirmish mode, you’ll be randomly placed on an area of the map. The location of your settlement can often be an advantage over other players. You can build a harbor and trade route if your settlement is near water.

Every new match starts the same; every player will start with Elari, Maru, or Jorn settlement. Your first main objective in the game is establishing resource-gathering points such as logging camps, quarries, and sawmills.

Logging camps are used to generate wood, which in turn is then processed at the sawmill into wooden planks. Wooden planks are then used to create buildings and wooden lodgings for citizens. Every building you create feeds into another building, creating an economic activity network.

Wood is only the start of resources that you’ll need to collect. Iron and coal are the next big resources that are required. Search surrounding areas on the map for mining spaces to mine coal, stone, iron, and gold.

Food shouldn’t be one of the resources that you need to worry about at the start of your game. Your carriers and soldiers will be more than happy to slave around at your command without any food.

The sole purpose of producing food is to improve the speed of your production line. Carriers and workers will work more efficiently after being provided with a food source. Blacksmiths smelt and forge weapons faster after being given portions of meat.

Therefore, you must focus on building and gathering resources to assist your city's development. Once you have established a network of resources, it’s crucial to have a strong and efficient workforce.

Carriers are one of the most essential workers for your settlement. These workers are responsible for constructing new buildings and repeat production jobs. You’ll be able to increase the speed of production by increasing the number of carriers in your population.

To maintain a healthy population of carriers, you’ll need to construct new houses when your population cap is limited. Engineers and fellow travelers also perform several unique features for your city.

Buildings can only be constructed on land you have claimed; you’ll only be able to claim land by sending out engineers to expand your borders. Furthermore, carriers can be recruited into military units to form your army.

When constructing buildings, it’s important to connect them to other buildings via a road. You’ll be able to construct two types of roads: dirt roads and gravel roads.

Dirt roads don’t cost any materials; only carrier carts and donkeys can use these roads. In comparison, gravel roads require stone to build and allow carriers to use a pull cart to transport goods.

Be the first opponent to establish a healthy economy and create a formidable army through your barracks. Destroy your enemies' settlements with your army and become king of the Skirmish mode.

How to Expand Territory

Guides

The game is about expanding your territory to be the biggest and strongest city. Expanding your territory is a slow process. To start, you’ll have a few hexagons around your settlement, which are used to mark your territory.

Your hexagons/ territory can then be expanded by a unit called an engineer, who will build and claim land for you. Engineers can be used in groups or as individuals to perform one task.

Sending out an engineer to claim land while the others continue to build your city will greatly increase your area of claimed land. It’s best first to send a military scout into the unseen map area to prevent enemy soldiers from attacking your engineers.

Search for land that has the most resources on it. This will significantly increase your chances of defeating your opposition. Once an area is marked out, send your engineers to claim the land.

How to Build Up an Army

Guides

You will need to build a strong army to overpower your enemy forces. Creating a formidable military requires more than just a troop of soldiers; you’ll need a strong economy.

A strong economy is built through an economic network that moves goods from one building to another. Every building in the game has a specific purpose and will feed into another.

To build military units, you must discover iron and coal deposits with your engineers and carriers. Free engineers will automatically be instructed, through the game's auto-build feature, to construct buildings.

You can also manually instruct engineers to construct buildings; this is handy when you’re focused on creating an army. Instruct your engineers to build iron and coal deposits, allowing you to collect raw materials needed for weapons.

Raw iron ore can then be converted into iron bars at a furnace, which you’ll need to construct. Building a blacksmith is the next step, as the iron bars can be converted into weapons.

Blacksmiths can only focus on one weapon at a time, meaning you must construct several to increase your weaponry. You can create three types of weapons at a blacksmith, including bows, swords, and axes.

Once you have assigned a type of weapon to a blacksmith, they will continue to forge them until instructed otherwise. Blacksmiths require meat. Giving a blacksmith meat will increase the speed of your production.

After you have created weapons, you’ll need to construct a barracks. Unemployed travelers and free settlers are trained at a barracks. Once a settler has been trained, they will form part of your military.

The size of your army depends on how fast your blacksmiths can forge weapons and the amount of resources your carriers can distribute. Once you have built a formidable army, your units can be upgraded by gathering new resources.

Search the map with scouts, enabling you to locate new resources. Your surplus resources can also be traded to gain more weapons. You will need to construct a harbor and open a trade route to trade your resources.

Your military units will be directly controlled by your command. Send your army out in groups, attack your enemies, or defend your settlement against unwanted enemies.

How to Improve Your Gameplay

Hints

Occupy Your Carriers

Keeping your carriers busy is the key to building a strong army and a formidable economy. Carriers are the backbone of your economy and are responsible for constructing new buildings and repeating production jobs.

Running low on carriers will halt your construction and production capabilities. To ensure you don’t run out of carriers, you must build houses when you reach your population cap.

Build Stone Roads

Building a stone road has several advantages for travelers and carriers. Stone roads should be built between separate buildings or along any paths to make deliveries faster.

A stone road gives travelers a speed advantage, as walking across your settlement is easier. Stone roads also allow carriers to pull carts across your settlement. Pull carriages triple your carrier's capacity to what was previously available.
