The game is set during an era before the time of the Vikings, when the gods walked the Earth according to Norse mythology. There are many figures from Norse mythology in the game, not only the Norse gods, but also the Draugr (undead monsters in Norse mythology) and Jörmungandr (the World Serpent and a child of Loki).

The name Atreus comes from Greek mythology. Atreus, along with his twin brother Thyestes, was exiled for murdering their half-brother. Atreus is the father of Agamemnon and Menelaus, two important figures in the Trojan War.
