How to upgrade the Xbox One hard-drive

December 2, 2013 by Staff - 1 Comment

If you think upgrading the hard-drive in your Xbox One will increase its performance markedly (like with the PS4) then think again. Not only is the whole process pretty complicated, it will void your warranty and give you only limited performance gains.

In order to upgrade the Xbox One hard-drive you’ll need to run some Linux scripts… uh oh. For those of you brave enough to continue reading, you can find all the stuff you need to download here, and then we suggest you watch the video embedded below which will tell you what to do with it all.

We should also warn those of you looking to upgrade just to increase the hard-drive’s storage capacity, that Microsoft will eventually introduce external USB storage for the Xbox One. So if you can hold on (and would also like to hold onto your warranty) then we suggest making do with the 500GB currently available.

How to upgrade the PS4 hard-drive (picture guide)

November 10, 2013 by Staff - Leave a comment

The Playstation 4 comes with a 500GB hard-drive as standard but with some games clocking in at around 50GB each, it won’t take very long to fill that up – particularly if you are going “all digital” this generation and also plan on storing some media on the console (although note that you won’t be able to play much out of the box).

Luckily the PS4 HDD is easily upgradable. You just need to make sure that the new hard-drive you purchase is a 5400 RPM SATA II drive that is no thicker than 9.5mm (and also bigger than 160GB – although we don’t imagine many people will be wanting to downgrade!).

So what’s the procedure exactly? Well thanks to our friends at we’ve got the ultra high resolution images below which should guide you through the process. It looks very easy and the only comment we have is in respect of the back panel itself – there’s nothing tricky in getting it off apparently, just give it a gentle pull and it should pop off. Have fun upgrading!

Full details of the PS3 to PS4 game upgrade program

September 22, 2013 by Staff - Leave a comment

Sony has finally revealed “official” details of the process for upgrading the PS3 version of a game to the PS4 version, and it only applies to four select games, so read on to make sure you’re set for launch on November 15.

The four games in question and that you’ll be able to upgrade for the Playstation 4 are Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag, Call of Duty: Ghosts, Watch Dogs and Battlefield 4.

Essentially, when you purchase these games (either disc or digital version) you’ll receive an entitlement to download a digital copy of the game for Playstation when it becomes available, for the price of $9.99.

If you buy the disc version, you’ll get an upgrade code included in the box. Redeem the code in the Playstation Store and you’ll be able to download the PS4 version. You will, however, need to hang on to that PS3 disc because it will need to be inserted whenever you go to play the digital PS4 edition.

If you buy the digital version of the PS3 game then things will be a lot easier. You simply need to login to the Playstation Store and search for the PS4 version of the game. It should show up for $9.99. You then just download it and start playing!

Oh, and the upgrade program has a limited run time in respect of each game. For Assassin’s Creed IV and Watch Dogs you’ll need to upgrade by January 31 2014, for Battlefield 4 by March 28 and for Call of Duty: Ghosts by March 31.

Shuhei Yoshida on PS4 download speeds, HDMI capture & more

Shuhei Yoshida

President of Sony Computer Entertainment Worldwide Studios Shuhei Yoshida has posted several very informative tidbits of Playstation 4 information to Twitter recently, covering everything from download speeds to HDMI capture and also next-generation game upgrade requirements.

PS3 Disc Required for Upgraded PS4 Games

First off, speaking about once you’ve successfully upgraded from the PS3 to the PS4 version of a game, Yoshida-san said that while you’re playing that (digital) PS4 version, the original PS3 disc will still need to be in your Playstation 4’s disc tray.

HDMI Capture Availability

Next up was a question about the HDMI capture capabilities of the Playstation 4. Yoshida-san said that we won’t have them at launch but that the features be added later by a patch.

Download Speeds

Finally, someoneone complained that downloading the digital version of GTA V for their PS3 via the Playstation Network was extremely slow. Yoshida-san said that speeds would be improved once the Playstation 4 is released (and rightly so)! After all, Microsoft is talking about the cloud capabilities of the Xbox One pretty hard…
