PS4 Sales Outstrip Its Predecessors by a Huge Margin

February 20, 2014 by Staff - Leave a comment

We reported yesterday that the PS4 has already sold 5.3 million units, so there’s no doubt that the console is selling quite well, but NeoGaf user Aquamarine really put it into perspective by comparing sales data from Sony’s previous consoles.

  • 4 months (one territory) – March 31st, 1995 – 0.85 million
  • 10 months – September 30th, 1995 – 1.77 million
  • 16 months – March 31st, 1996 – 4.26 million
  • 22 months – September 30th, 1996 – 8.07 million
  • 28 months – March 31st, 1997 – 13.50 million

  • 1 month (one territory) – March 31st, 2000 – 1.41 million
  • 7 months (one territory) – September 30th, 2000 – 3.52 million
  • 13 months – March 31st, 2001 – 10.61 million
  • 19 months – September 30th, 2001 – 19.58 million
  • 22 months – December 30th, 2001 – 24.99 million

  • 1 month – December 31st, 2006 – 1.7 million
  • 4 months – March 31st, 2007 – 3.5 million
  • 7 months – June 30th, 2007 – 4.2 million
  • 10 months – September 30th, 2007 – 5.5 million
  • 13 months – December 31st, 2007 – 10.4 million

Compare those numbers to what we’ve seen from the PS4 so far.

  • 1 day – November 16th, 2013 – 1 million
  • 2 weeks – December 1st, 2013 – 2.1 million
  • 1 month – December 28th, 2013 – 4.2 million
  • 3 months – February 8th, 2014 – 5.3 million

It only took the PS4 3 months to sell 5.3 million units. None of its predecessors even came close to that sort of success. Sony must be thrilled with these sorts of sales—and who knows how high those numbers will climb when the PS4 launches in Japan later this month?

Relive the games: PSX to PS4

July 30, 2013 by Staff - 2 Comments

Playstation has come a long way since the PSX was first unveiled and classics like Crash Bandicoot, Gran Turismo and FFVII were released. Now if you want to relive the evolution from the original Playstation all the way through to the PS4, you can. Someone has created a YouTube clip that spans several genres and showcases a PSX game, a PS2 game, a PS3 game and finally a PS4 game from each.

For me, the video certainly brings back some memories, and the creators did a very fair job in terms of choosing what games to include. Final Fantasy VII is an all-time personal favorite of mine along with the original Gran Turismo and I also have to say that Killzone 1 could have almost passed as a PS3 game!

Did any of your favorite titles, past or present, feature in the clip?

Remembering our favorite Playstation cheats

July 7, 2013 by Staff - 1 Comment

While waiting patiently for the PS4 to be released nearer the end of this year (along with all the cheats and codes… which will be right here for you) we thought it would be nice to look back at previous Playstation systems and remember some of our favorite cheats. So here’s our list of memorable cheats for the PSX, PS2 and PS3.

Grand Theft Auto San Andreas (PS2)

Games like GTA were made to have cheats used, once you’ve clocked it without cheats of course… It’s just so much fun! Listing one specific favorite cheat for this game is too difficult – there was so many of them! Some of the goodies though, in no particular order:

  • Infinite Health: Down, X, Right, Left, Right, R1, Right, Down, Up, Triangle.
  • Infinite Ammo: L1, R1, Square, R1, Left, R2, R1, Left, Square, Down, L1(2).
  • Health, Armor and Cash: R1, R2, L1, X, Left, Down, Right, Up, Left, Down, Right, Up.
  • Weapons #1: R1, R2, L1, R2, Left, Down, Right, Up, Left, Down, Right, Up.
  • Weapons #2: R1, R2, L1, R2, Left, Down, Right, Up, Left, Down(2), Left.
  • Weapons #3: R1, R2, L1, R2, Left, Down, Right, Up, Left, Down(3).

Doom (PSX)

No cheats list can be complete without mention of DOOM. Personally speaking, these were the very first cheat codes I ever used, albeit on a PC. For cheat-code users, DOOM along with its multitude of handy cheats, is legendary.

  • Full Guns and Ammo: X, Triangle, L1, Up, Down, R2, Left, Left
  • Full Map: Triangle, Triangle, L2, R2, L2, R2, R1, Square
  • God Mode: Down, L2, Square, R1, Right, L1, Left, Circle
  • Level Warp: Right, Left, R2, R1, Triangle, L1, Circle, X

And don’t forget the direct level passwords (too many to list).

Mortal Kombat (PSX)

The Khameleon cheat defines what we think cheats should be. Well, at least in the old days and particularly in terms of fighting games. Who wants to unlock a character when you can enter a code and have arrive in the form of your current character exploding? Awesome!

Play as Khameleon: Choose to play as either Reptile, Sub Zero, Rain, Human Smoke, Ermac, Noob Saibot or Scorpion. Assuming you are player one, hold Left + R1 + R2 + Square + Triangle until the match begins. Your character will explode and change into Khameleon, a translucent ninja with an ability to transform into any other ninja.

Guitar Hero (PS2)

The Guitar Hero series of games went out of flavor, massively, a while back – but it still had some cool cheats. None of which was better than the “Unlock All” cheat. This gave you access to the game’s entire song library from the get-go. Pretty handy if you were more of a music lover as opposed to a master guitarist.

  • Unlock All (NTSC): Yellow, Orange, Blue, Blue, Orange, Yellow, Yellow
  • Unlock All (PAL): Yellow, Orange, Orange, Yellow, Blue, Blue, Yellow

Turok: Evolution (PS2)

The available cheats for Turok: Evolution on the PS2 represented pretty much what you’d want in a shooter: invincibility, unlock all weapons, unlock all levels and unlimited ammo. Seriously, what more do you need? It even had its own “cheats menu”.

  • Invincibility: emerpus
  • Invisibility: sllewgh
  • Unlock All Weapons: texas
  • Unlock Everything: FMNFB
  • Unlimited Ammo: madman
  • Unlock All Levels: sellout

NBA Jam (PS3)

NBA Jam eventually made its way to the Playstation 3 and we’re pleased to say, so did its familiar cheats system. Not only could you enter codes at the title screen, but using specific initials would also grant you various teams and playable characters. Some of our favorites below…

  • Beastie Boys Team (title screen): Up(2), Down(2), Left, Right, Left, Right, Circle, X.
  • Democrats Team (title screen): Left(13), X.
  • NBA Mascots (initials): MAS (player one), COT (player two).
  • Team Jordan (initials): JOR (player one), DAN (player two).
