While the Xbox One still lags behind the Playstation 4 in terms of pre-orders in the United States, it is gaining ground according to VGChartz.
Having collected data up to the week ended October 19 2013, the Playstation 4 has a total of 725,000 pre-orders in the US versus 525,000 for the Xbox One. While it’s still in second place, this represents a close in the difference for Microsoft’s next-generation console, with it adding 175,000 pre-ordered units over the prior four weeks. In the same period an additional 125,000 pre-orders were received for the PS4.
In terms of games, Call of Duty: Ghosts is the most popular pre-ordered title for both systems followed by Battlefield 4. Killzone: Shadow Fall comes in third for the Playstation 4 while Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag takes that spot on the Xbox One. AC4 sits in fourth place on the PS4 table.

The upcoming launches of the Xbox One and the Playstation 4 are killing demand for Call of Duty: Ghosts pre-orders. Well, at least that’s the excuse according to Eric Hirshberg, CEO of Activision.
Activision held it’s earnings call with financial analysts yesterday (to explain the public company’s latest financial results and field questions) and in it, Hirshberg said that pre-orders for the next Call of Duty game are “well below” the pace set by the previous title in the CoD series, Call of Duty: Black Ops II. Hirshberg laid the blame on next-gen consoles:
Our quantitative consumer research indicates that hesitation amongst past COD pre-orderers is primarily due to not knowing which platform they will be playing on, which is natural at this time in the console transition.
The good news is that pre-orders for CoD: Ghosts are still double that of the original Call of Duty: Black Ops. Why is this good? Because that was the first game in the Black Ops iteration of the series, just like Ghosts is. The reasoning being that once gamers warm to the Ghosts series, CoD: Ghosts II should sell well (or that’s the theory).
While we think that Hirshberg has a point, it’s also fair to say that gamers are probably getting a little tired of the same “copy and paste” formula that Call of Duty games are now infamous for. The bump in graphics that we get each time a new CoD game is rolled out just isn’t enough anymore…

Financial analysis firm Cowen & Co has developed what it calls it’s “video game odometer” – basically a system designed to tell you how well a game will sell compared to others once it is launched. Or put another way, a method to track pre-orders.
Cowen just released the latest version of its report which has Call of Duty: Ghosts coming in top spot with an “odometer score” of 73. Note this is less than the “odometer score” that Call of Duty: Black Ops II received (it got 100), indicating that demand for COD Ghosts may not be as high this time around.
We’ve set out the top 10 list below, and found it very interesting to note that Grand Theft Auto V is down in third place with a score of only 58.4. To be honest I don’t know anyone that has a PS3 or Xbox 360 and isn’t going to purchase that game! Was also shocked to see Diablo III (the PS3 and Xbox 360 versions) ranked so highly.
What do you think of the Cowen list? Does it reflect your thoughts on upcoming games?
