What is Microsoft planning?
In his latest podcast, Larry “Major Nelson” Hryb said he and Jeff Rubenstein have something “super cool” and “awesome” planned for PAX Prime. PAX Prime, which isn’t to be confused with the recently-concluded PAX East, will run from August 30-September 2, so we’ve still got a good wait before we learn more.
Don’t worry, though. E3 will come before then, and Microsoft has said many times now that they expect a strong show. Even more interestingly, Major Nelson said they’ll have some events before E3, too.
Personally, we hope these events somehow involve new game announcements for the Xbox One, or at least more details about games that have already been announced. What do you think they’ll be?Tags: e3, major nelson, pax prime, xbox one

Microsoft has now released the first Xbox One system update and given that the process for updating differs a little to that of the Xbox 360, Major Nelson thought he’d give everyone a heads up on how things will work. Basically there are two ways it could play out depending on whether you’re using the Xbox One’s “Instant On” feature or not.
If you are, then your console will automatically check for updates when you turn it off. So given that the update has been released, your console should have started to automatically download the update. Once it’s finished, then the console should power off completely. Then when you turn it on (note the “Xbox On” voice command won’t work), it will begin to install the update and reboot a few times. After that you should be set.
If you don’t use “Instant On” then you’ll have to wait until Thursday at 2am PT to download and apply the update manually. So if you want it early, then enable “Instant On”.
All that said, we’re guessing you wanna know what the heck this update does right? Without further ado the update…
Major Nelson also said that Microsoft are actively monitoring users’ requests for features and will look to implement them where appropriate.Tags: major nelson, patch, system, update, xbox one

Larry Hyrb recently sat down with Newegg Arcade and talked about the Xbox One and RRODs as well as 4K resolution support.
We’re sure that you all remember the red ring of death (RROD) issues that plagued many Xbox 360s. In fact the console became notorious for it early on, before Microsoft managed to make its manufacturing process a bit more reliable/consistent.
So it’s natural that some people (especially us early adopters) are a little concerned about whether this first batch of retail Xbox One consoles might suffer the same sort of problems. According to Hyrb it shouldn’t be an issue:
Well certainly with the Xbox 360, we had some challenges at the launch. Once we identified that we took control of it. We wanted to do it right by our customers. Our customers are very important to us. With the Xbox One it is standard consumer electronics warranty. We are really excited about the reliability that folks will get out of the Xbox One. We had a lot of learning coming out of the Xbox 360 and we have put it in Xbox One.
Honestly we think he could have provided a little more comfort/make a more strongly-worded statement. Whether he straight out says there will no issues or sticks to the statement above, Microsoft will still cop the same amount of flack.
And on 4K resolution we have nothing to worry about in terms of the Xbox One not being future-proof, Hyrb confirmed:
[Xbox One] supports 4K gaming and entertainment. In fact we are shipping an HDMI cable that is 4K rated. So when you get your HDMI cable out of the box it is 4K rated. We are looking forward to bringing 4K capabilities to our consumers in the future, but it depends on the developers.

Major Nelson couldn’t confirm if we’ll be able to play personal media files via local network or from a USB hard-drive on the Xbox One, but did say that the idea is that the console is a total media device. It would therefore be surprising if they did not implement this functionality.
IE on Xbox One will definitely support HTML5, but he couldn’t confirm the extent of flash support.
Both digital and disc versions of games will have the same MSRP. It it also possible that you’ll be able to buy digital download codes from games retailers, although this won’t be implemented by launch in November.
Major also had some words on why you should buy an Xbox One:
It’s the device for everyone, it has the features to please the hardcore gamer and even media fans. No features were created at another’s expense. It’s as much about games as the Xbox 360 and has the added abilities that make it the best in TV, Movies, and Sports.
So no major announcements/information breakthroughs, but we’re getting there. It was a shame that Major couldn’t confirm personal media will be supported. Given the spin Microsoft have put on the Xbox One’s functions to date, you’d think it would be all the way at the top of their list!Tags: digital, major nelson, media, xbox one

Wanna know the biggest news of the day? The retail box for the Xbox One console is green… and no we’re not kidding!
Major Nelson just tweeted a picture of the very first Xbox One retail console, fresh off the assembly line, in all it’s green glory and told everyone he’ll be taking it to the Tokyo Games Show.

At least now you know exactly what to look out for when November 22 rolls around… if someone tries to sell you a blue box – run away (unless it’s a PS4)! Just over two months to go now so not long.Tags: major nelson, retail, xbox one

There’s been a bit of hoopla over at the NeoGAF forums lately given that Major Nelson finally had his account activated there (I’ve been waiting years). But that’s not the point of this post – thankfully!
What is the point and what we want to know from you, is what you think the nickname of the Xbox One should be? The Playstation 4 is easy (PS4) and the Wii U doesn’t really need a nick name (not with 4 letters anyway), but what have you been calling the Xbox One?
Someone over at NeoGAF actually asked this same question to Major Nelson – well he actually asked him what he thought of the “Xbone” nickname specifically – to which Major Nelson replied:
I don’t like it… it disrespects the teams that have put in thousands of hours (already) into the development of the product. Sure, it’s cheeky but I don’t care for it myself.
The name actually makes sense to us (I’ve gone to type “Xbox One” and instead typed “Xbone” so many times it’s not funny), but it also has some negative connotations stemming from the extremely negative reaction that gamers gave the Xbone when it was first announced at E3.
So what do you think the Xbox One should be nicknamed?Tags: major nelson, nickname, xbone, xbox one

Xbox Director of Programming Larry Hyrb – more commonly known by his Gamertag ‘Major Nelson’ – has come out in support of comments recently made by his colleague at Microsoft, Albert Penello.
As I said above, Albert is one of the most amazing people I work with – that’s why I invited him on my podcast a few weeks ago. I jab him a bit about posting on ‘GAF (fact: they would not approve my account of there) but he’s smart and driven. He’s also right: We have some of smartest programmers in the world working on Xbox One. I am very much looking forward to the next few months (and beyond) as the truth comes out.
The last sentence might be a little bit dramatic, but it’s clear Hyrb is pretty confident of the Xbox One!Tags: major nelson, performance, ps4, reddit, xbox one

We just told you that the Xbox One is arriving November 22 and now to get gamers that little much more excited Larry Hyrb (better known as Major Nelson / director of programming for Xbox Live) has revealed a few shots of final, retail-ready Xbox One consoles being shipped out.
Where the consoles are off to we’re not told, but presumably they’ll all be used for promotional purposes. So the good news is that you’re now more likely to see Xbox One kiosks around the place and maybe even get a chance to try the console out for yourself!
Also note the warning label on the boxes:
DO NOT SELL OR DISPLAY BEFORE NOVEMBER 22 2013
Actually, on second thoughts maybe they aren’t promotion units afterall…Tags: major nelson, retail, xbox one

Hopefully you saw our post regarding the White Special Edition Xbox One that all members of the MS Interactive Entertainment Business unit will receive once the console finally launches in November.
That story also got posted to Reddit where Larry Hyrb (aka Major Nelson) has an active, verified account. Responding to a fan question as to whether the White Xbox One might ever be sold to the public, Hyrb said:
maybe waaaay in the future
This shouldn’t come as a major surprise to anyone as manufacturers often release different colored variants as a console matures in it’s life cycle. That plus the fact that the Xbox 360 was originally white itself and I think we have a pretty good chance of seeing White Xbox Ones in the wild in the future!Tags: major nelson, special edition, white, xbox one

Is the Xbox One running away with the ball?
Today Aaron Greenberg and Major Nelson have both tweeted that pre-orders for the Xbox One are trending ahead of Xbox 360 pre-orders for the same time period.
Just found out #XboxOne preorders are trending ahead of Xbox 360 preorders during the same time period + sold out at most U.S. retailers.

This will be welcome news for the Xbox team which has had a very tough time introducing the new Xbox One to the world (let’s be honest, they’ve made hash of it).
It’s also important to note a couple of other things:
Anyway, it’s great news and has us pumped for the Xbox One launch in November! Have you pre-ordered?Tags: major nelson, pre-order, ps4, sales, xbox, xbox 360, xbox one
