Hitman 6 Won’t Be Shown at E3

We don’t really know a whole lot about the next Hitman game, except that it’s being developed for the PS4, Xbox One, and PC. Back in January, IO Interactive provided a few details in an open letter to fans, confirming things like an “an open, non-linear level design” and the return of Contracts Mode.

A lot of people have speculated over what we might see from this Hitman title at E3… and IO Interactive noticed. Therefore, the company announced that the game “is going to be under wraps for a bit longer.”

To make up for it, we’ve gotten to see the first piece of concept art, shown above. The building seen in that image will be larger than any location in Hitman: Absolution, and you’ll be able to fully explore it.

Hitman fans will probably be a little disappointed at this news, but at least IO Interactive made it known. As the announcement pointed out, “the worst thing is to hope for something that doesn’t turn up.” We probably all have a few unconfirmed games we’re dying to see at E3, and it’s easier to know in advance that they won’t be there than to wait in hope until the very end.

New Hitman and Deus Ex in Development

Square Enix recently sent a list of release dates to Square Enix Origin, including a “TBA” section for games that are still being worked on, some of which are for the PS4 and the Xbox One.

  • Next-gen Hitman
  • Next-gen Deus-Ex
  • Next-gen Tomb Raider
  • Hitman GO (Mobile)
  • Final Fantasy Agito (Mobile)
  • Final Fantasy XV (PS4, XBOX ONE)
  • Kingdom Hearts 2.5 HD Remix (PS3)
  • Kingdom Hearts III (PS4, XBOX ONE)

Of course, we’ve known about some of these titles for a while now, but the first three jumped out at us. Back in January, we were uncertain about the future of the Hitman series, but this seems to be confirmation that a next-gen Hitman game is in the works.

We didn’t even suspect that we’d be hearing news about the next Deus Ex game, so that was a welcome surprise. In fact, yesterday Square Enix registered a trademark for Deus Ex: Mankind Divided. We don’t have any details beyond the title, but that could very well be our first next-gen Deus Ex game.

And finally, this list reminds us that there will be a sequel to the recent Tomb Raider reboot.

Square Enix has a lot of big names planned for the PS4 and Xbox One. What are you looking forward to the most?

Square Enix Montreal cancels next-gen Hitman title

Information about a next-gen addition to the Hitman series first arose in 2011, and concept art for the game appeared in 2012. Very little was known about it, with some information suggesting it would be a reimagining with the series’ standard gameplay and other information suggesting it would have online components such as leaderboards and microtransactions.

Fans became concerned about the game’s future when Square Enix Montreal’s focus was shifted to mobile games in 2013, and it seems their fears were justified—senior game designer Richard Knight’s LinkedIn profile has revealed the cancellation of the title.

Instead, the company is making a Hitman title for iOS and Android. This seems to be part of a company-wide move to enter the mobile market. However, while Square Enix thinks this is a good idea, players are less certain. Many people decry the release of mobile games—which sometimes are of lesser quality than console games—and their frequent emphasis on microtransactions as a move that will spell out Square Enix’s doom. There are not enough details known about the mobile Hitman title to predict whether it will be a success or a failure.

The good news is that Hitman itself has not been relegated entirely to mobile entries. The main series is in the hands of IO Interactive, which will be working on an AAA Hitman title, but whether this is Montreal’s cancelled game or a new one is unclear.
