Today Sony released both US and EU versions of an “Ultimate FAQ” for the Playstation 4. The FAQs cover mostly hardware issues such as media playback, game installation and other console features. Following is a couple of high level points that we picked out.

  • Background downloads of game updates don’t require a PS+ subscription.
  • Firmware update discs can be ordered directly from Sony.
  • Playstation Plus save storage capacity is limited to 1GB.
  • The ability to help a friend out in a game remotely is a delayed feature.
  • There is no media server client functionality.
  • There is no MP3 support leaving Music Unlimited as the only potential source of background music.
  • Trophies still don’t sync instantly.
  • Voice commands do not require the PS4 eye camera.
  • Voice message are limited to 15 seconds maximum.

For us the lack of media server client functionality and the inability to play MP3s are the biggest issues by far. Why Sony would include them in the Playstation 3 and then drop them from the Playstation 4, in the year 2013, is beyond us. Perhaps such functions will be introduced in a future update.

Xbox One allows limited digital game and Gold features sharing

Xbox-One

Microsoft has just announced two pretty big benefits in terms of Xbox One functionality and features:

  1. When someone purchases and downloads an Xbox One game onto their console (digital games will be available from their release date, by the way) that game will be available to all users of that console, regardless of whether they are signed in to Live or not.
  2. Some of the benefits and features available to Xbox Live Gold subscribers will now be made available to every person who uses that particular Xbox One console at home (i.e. your non-Gold family members).

Sharing digital games

If the Xbox Live Gold subscriber in your house purchases and downloads a digital game, it will be available to all users of that console, no matter if they are signed into their account or not. Effectively anyone can play it on the console.

Also, if the purchaser of the game goes to a friend’s house and signs in, then his or her digital games collection will also be available on that console to play (and with the new smart downloading feature the Xbox One has this will be very useful!).

Sharing Xbox Live Gold benefits

We recently highlighted some features of Xbox Live/the Xbox One that would only be available to Xbox Live Gold subscribers. This included things like DVR functionality, Skype and SmartMatch (“smarter” multiplayer game matching).

Well now it has been revealed that these benefits will extend to all users of a Xbox One console provided at least one of them is a Live Gold subscriber. Effectively the Gold subscriber can grant access to the Gold features to all other users in his or her home.

Additionally, when a Gold subscriber goes to a friend’s place and uses their Xbox One console, their Gold benefits will temporarily follow them, enabling everyone to access the Gold features for that gaming session.

Good stuff Microsoft, keep it coming!

PS4 game data install order can be altered dynamically

Tidbits of information concerning many of the PS4’s “smaller features” continue to dribble out, the latest concerning the order in which game data is downloaded and installed on your console. You can check out our previous coverage on the matter here (including an overview).

Based on the popularity of particular parts of a game (i.e. single versus multiplayer, or one racing track versus another) the order in which specific game data is downloaded and installed onto your console (whether from the Playstation Network, or from Blu-Ray) can be changed, and it can be done on-the-fly.

Speaking to The Guardian, Evolution Studios’ Scott Kirkland had the following to say:

If we recognize that a majority of people take a particular path through the game that we didn’t anticipate, we could dynamically modify the default order that the digital version of the game gets pulled down in – and actually, that same technique could apply to how the data is pulled off the Blu-ray as well. We can continue to make the experience better for the player.

And if you’re not content to let someone else do all the thinking/work, the option is also there to choose specific parts to install first yourself. Like if you hate single player and wanna jump straight online – install multiplayer first.

It seems like more small features and benefits of the Playstation 4, much like this, continue to come to light as we get closer to the eventual launch of the console (exact release date still unconfirmed, by the way). Wonder what’s next…
