Today Sony released both US and EU versions of an “Ultimate FAQ” for the Playstation 4. The FAQs cover mostly hardware issues such as media playback, game installation and other console features. Following is a couple of high level points that we picked out.

  • Background downloads of game updates don’t require a PS+ subscription.
  • Firmware update discs can be ordered directly from Sony.
  • Playstation Plus save storage capacity is limited to 1GB.
  • The ability to help a friend out in a game remotely is a delayed feature.
  • There is no media server client functionality.
  • There is no MP3 support leaving Music Unlimited as the only potential source of background music.
  • Trophies still don’t sync instantly.
  • Voice commands do not require the PS4 eye camera.
  • Voice message are limited to 15 seconds maximum.

For us the lack of media server client functionality and the inability to play MP3s are the biggest issues by far. Why Sony would include them in the Playstation 3 and then drop them from the Playstation 4, in the year 2013, is beyond us. Perhaps such functions will be introduced in a future update.

PS4 digital games sharing and friends limit

ps4-faq

We all know that sharing physical games on the PS4 is dead easy. Just check out the video embedded at the bottom of this post. However according to the just published official Playstation 4 system FAQ, sharing digital games is going to be a little more complicated (although still pretty easy).

What you’ll need to do is select one particular console as your primary PS4 and this is where all you digital content will be automatically downloaded (i.e. the system in your bedroom/lounge/house). It is also the console that will link up with your PS Vita if you have one. Any user whatsoever will be able to play the games on that console too, no matter what account they are logged in to.

As for other consoles, like if you go to a friends house and play his or her Playstation 4, you can log into your PSN account there and download games and play them, but they will only be playable via your account.

The FAQ also tells us that the friends limit for the PS4 is 2,000 in total.

PS4: what you need to know

Sony came, they saw, and they totally dominated the Xbox One at E3.

It’s very safe to say that, at this stage of the next-generation console war, the PS4 has the upper hand over the X1. No DRM, no connectivity requirements, and no forced bundling of a camera. Plus the games rocked!

In fact, the only thing people are complaining about is that Playstation Plus will be required for online multiplayer gaming. I don’t think it’s a big deal – you can’t (usually) get everything, right? Oh, and did I mention that the Playstation is $100 cheaper than the Xbox One!?

We could go on, but below is a neat summary of everything you need to know about the PS4 at this stage. Be sure to have a read and then let us know what you think of the Playstation 4. We are very excited! (more…)

FAQ: X1 internet check-ins, Kinect privacy & game licensing

June 6, 2013 by Cheats.co Staff - 3 Comments

x1-kinect-nologo

Via the official Xbox Wire, Microsoft has finally come out and told us more or less exactly how game licensing, connectivity requirements, and Kinect privacy will work on the Xbox One (X1). Here’s what you need to know:

Game Licensing

  • Buy any game via digital (Xbox Live) or disc on the day of release.
  • No disc required to play any game – everything is stored in the cloud and accessed through your login (ie play your games at your friends house on his console with your login – hourly internet check-in required for this though).
  • Anyone can play games on your console (regardless of who they are logged in as).
  • Up to ten members of your household can access your “shared games library” from any console at any time using their login.
  • Renting and loaning of games is not possible at launch, but Microsoft is looking at introducing this later.
  • You will be able to trade-in games, but this will be entirely up to the publisher and only at “participating retailers”. There are no fees charged by Microsoft for this (but publishers could).

Internet Connectivity Requirements

  • Your console will “check-in” with Microsoft every 24 hours over the internet. If you can’t or don’t do this, you can’t play offline or online games.
  • If you are playing on a friend’s console with your login (ie to access your games library) then the X1 must check-in over the internet every one hour.

Kinect and Privacy

  • If your X1 is turned on and you are having a conversation with someone, the conversation is not being recorded or uploaded.
  • When your X1 is turned off, the Kinect is only listening for the command “Xbox on” to turn the console back on. This feature can be disabled.
