PS4 mobile apps released for iOS & Android, Day One patch download details

November 13, 2013 by Staff - Leave a comment

Both the “Day One” update patch (v1.50) for the PS4 as well as the official mobile companion apps for Sony’s next generation console have been released and we’ve got all the details.

What each of the Android and iOS apps will let you do, at least initially, is as follows:

  • Use your mobile as a second screen for certain games
  • Use your mobile’s on-screen keyboard to type on the PS4
  • Compare your Trophies with friends
  • Text chat with your friends and check out their profile (and yours)
  • Receive game alerts and browse the PSN Store

Unfortunately if you live outside North America you’ll need to wait until closer to the time of the Playstation 4’s launch in your territory (ie November 29) to download the apps and take them for a spin yourself.

As far as the Day One patch goes, we recommend that you follow the instructions posted by Sony here and download the patch via the internet now. You can then copy it to a USB stick and avoid the need to wait to download the patch on launch day directly to your console (along with millions of other people). It’s 323MB in size and will be required to log into the PSN on your PS4 on Day One (although you’ll still be able to play games without it).

Oh, and one other thing, Sony has published a web-based online user manual for the PS4. You can check it out here.

Free FIFA 14 offer for EU limited to Day One editions only

September 2, 2013 by Staff - Leave a comment

If you’re in the EU and were looking forward to getting a free copy of FIFA 14 with your Xbox One pre-order, then I hope you got the Day One edition of the console, because Microsoft has come out and clarified that it’s the only edition that will get the free game. If you’ve only ordered the standard edition, you won’t be getting FIFA 14 – free at least!

To quote what Phil Harrison, Microsoft corporate VP previously said:

All pre-orders for Xbox One this holiday will include a copy of FIFA 14 at no extra cost.

The official Xbox Twitter account even said the same thing:

@Ianoconnor22 All pre-orders come with FIFA 14 in Europe, Ian. Doesn’t matter if it’s a Day One console or not.— Xbox (@Xbox) August 27, 2013

Now, you’d think based on those statements that ANY pre-order for a Xbox One would get the free game right? Apparently not. Another person, this time Microsoft social marketing manager Graeme Boyd, just tweeted the following:

Given that the original Xbox Twitter account tweet above has now been deleted, it’s safe to say that this is Microsoft’s official position… for now.

Amazon has new Day One PS4 launch bundle

August 31, 2013 by Staff - 2 Comments

Here’s one for those of you who still haven’t pre-ordered or otherwise secured a Day One Playstation 4 console and want one for the launch on November 15 (in the US).

Amazon has just put up a brand new PS4 bundle that includes both the original PS4 console package (including one DualShock 4 controller) as well as an additional controller.

The price is the same as you’d pay if you purchased the extra controller separately (ie $399 + $60 = $459) but the thing is that this bundle will ship to you on launch day. This is opposed to all other PS4 packages on Amazon that are either unavailable, or only let you sign up to be notified via email when they become available.

So, if you want a PS4 on launch day and were going to get an extra controller anyway, this is one to check out!

System Achievements confirmed with “Day One” Achievement

June 11, 2013 by Staff - 9 Comments

We now know that the Xbox One (X1) will be released during November this year with a price tag of $499 in the United States. You can check out more details here if you want.

In the box you’ll get the console with a 500GB hard drive, a Kinect 2 and a new X1 controller. However, if you preorder the system in order to reserve it for launch day, you’ll receive a special “Day One Edition” Xbox One package.

The specifics of the X1 system itself won’t change with the “Day One Edition”, but you will get:

  • a slightly different controller (see above);
  • a special “Day One” achievement; and
  • pieces of exclusive DLC for a couple of games.

We actually predicted the Day One Achievement in this article here, and it seems to us a fairly clever/ruthless way for Microsoft to get a few extra X1 preorders under it’s belt – particularly from Achievement hunters. Imagine being an Achievement addict and knowing that you could never, ever get the Day One Achievement no matter what you did… it’s enough to drive even the most level-headed junkie insane!

It also marks the beginning of a new genre and type of Achievement – system Achievements that aren’t tied to a specific game. Again, we hinted at this possibility in an earlier article – make sure you read our thoughts there to get an idea of what could be on it’s way given these new Achievements.
