Xbox Live Could Come to iOS and Android Devices

March 5, 2014 by Staff - Leave a comment

If you enjoy using Xbox Live on your Xbox and Windows products, stay tuned—in the future, you could be able to access it on other devices, as well.

Verge received word from anonymous sources that Microsoft has plans to extend Xbox Live to devices that run the iOS and Android operating systems. This would make the service more versatile and far-reaching.

While we can’t confirm the truth of this rumor, it is supported by an old Microsoft job listing. This listing, which has since been deleted, referenced “a modern framework that is open-source, lightweight, extensible and scalable across various platforms including Windows Store, Windows Phone, iOS, and Android.”

Microsoft has declined to comment on the matter.

As with all rumors, take it with a pinch of salt. We’ll keep you update if further details emerge.

November 26, 2013 by Staff - Leave a comment

The Playstation 4 arrives in Europe (and other places like Australia) in just a few days’ time on November 29 and finally, the PlayStation mobile companion app is also available to download.

If you want a full run-down of what the Playstation mobile app can do (and where can download it) then check out this previous blog post. Essentially it will let you use your mobile as a second screen for some games, communicate with your PSN friends, receive game alerts, start game downloads (including demos etc) and also compare your Trophies.

Sony also just published the list of console apps that will be available for European PS4 owners at launch. As you can see not all are available everywhere (in fact most are limited to specific countries) and in addition, the Quickflix app for NZ and Australian gamers will be rolled out later in December.

PS4 mobile apps released for iOS & Android, Day One patch download details

November 13, 2013 by Staff - Leave a comment

Both the “Day One” update patch (v1.50) for the PS4 as well as the official mobile companion apps for Sony’s next generation console have been released and we’ve got all the details.

What each of the Android and iOS apps will let you do, at least initially, is as follows:

  • Use your mobile as a second screen for certain games
  • Use your mobile’s on-screen keyboard to type on the PS4
  • Compare your Trophies with friends
  • Text chat with your friends and check out their profile (and yours)
  • Receive game alerts and browse the PSN Store

Unfortunately if you live outside North America you’ll need to wait until closer to the time of the Playstation 4’s launch in your territory (ie November 29) to download the apps and take them for a spin yourself.

As far as the Day One patch goes, we recommend that you follow the instructions posted by Sony here and download the patch via the internet now. You can then copy it to a USB stick and avoid the need to wait to download the patch on launch day directly to your console (along with millions of other people). It’s 323MB in size and will be required to log into the PSN on your PS4 on Day One (although you’ll still be able to play games without it).

Oh, and one other thing, Sony has published a web-based online user manual for the PS4. You can check it out here.
