We all know that the Wii U is doing pretty poorly in retail stores and is being out-sold, easily, both each of the Xbox One and the PS4. So whether or not Nintendo was/is prepared to release a successor to the console might have been in doubt.

According to a post on the NeoGAF forums however, you Nintendo fans need not worry, as the Japanese gaming icon is already hard at work on a new Wii? next-next-generation console and has been since 2013…. The only thing is that it might be handheld only!

Forum user “wsippel” had the following to say:

Anyway, Nintendo apparently started working on a new platform in early 2013 and has already selected a vendor for the SoC after talking to several potential candidates. The SoC might be based on an existing design, but will be changed to fit Nintendo’s requirements. I assume it’s for their next handheld, though.

As you can see wsippel thinks that this information points to a next-generation handheld console, not the living room stationed machines that we have at the moment. Nothing official will probably come out on this matter for quite some time, so until then stayed tuned to Cheats.co and the NeoGAF forums for further (rumored) updates.
