Free games: the Playstation Plus network advantage

Last Updated: June 30, 2013

With the release of the PS4 later this year (along with loads of juicy cheats for its games, which we will be mostly focused on) many current Xbox and Wii gamers will be reconsidering their position and which system they are going with for the next generation of gaming.

One positive about choosing Playstation 4 is the Playstation Plus network and the free games it gives you access to – something which Sony has been heavily promoting of late.

The Instant Game Collection feature basically gives you 12 free PS3 games and 6 free PS Vita games with new games (also free) then being added to your collection each month. What you’d receive on joining today is displayed above. Of course Sony can only offer free Playstation 3 and Vita games at the moment, but they have confirmed that the Instant Game Collection will be carried over to the PS4. In fact, DriveClub PS Plus edition will be available as a digital download when the PS4 launches. Thereafter you’ll get one free PS4 game each month.

And if you really want to know how rewarding Playstation Plus membership could potentially be, check out the image above which shows all 64 games you could have had you had an Instant Game Collection for the past year. Note: you need to be a member at the time a game is added to the collection to be able to add it to your account. So if you signed up today you would not get instant access to all 64 games (you’d get the 12 games referred to above).

We think the graphic is pretty impressive, and the service certainly compares favorably to current offerings on Xbox Live. That said, Microsoft have taken notice and are starting to promote free digital game downloads of the same kind to Xbox Live Gold members. It will be interesting to see how the two services compare if and when Microsoft attempts to compete more directly with the Playstation offering.
