Plaques

Easter Eggs

In the offices at the start of the game, there are plaques for the developers and the game.

Secret Office and Kickstarter Backers

Easter Eggs

After the Newspaper Office has been closed, if you sneak back inside, you’ll be able to enter the Editor-in-Chief’s office. If you move the cat statues to match the cat paintings located in the office, you’ll unlock the way to a secret room. The secret room contains her articles and other pieces of lore, some items, and a list of “Suspected Downers” that is actually a list of all the Kickstarter backers.

Haworth Labs Rain

Glitches

The rain is like a ribbon in like 2 inches of the screen. Near the entrance.

Popular Culture References

Easter Eggs

Several of the trophy/achievement names reference popular culture, including:

  • Remember, Remember – This is most likely a nod to the poem about Guy Fawkes day, which begins “Remember, remember, the fifth of November,” as this involves getting all of the collectibles. The collectible masks resemble Guy Fawkes masks.
  • Resistance is Futile – The common message said by the Borg in Star Trek.
  • You Do Know Jack – This may be a play on “you don’t know jack,” a phrase used to indicate you know very little.
  • Baby You’re A Rich Man – This is the name of a song by the Beatles.
  • Gotta Catch Them All! – The Pokémon motto/tagline.
  • I Love the Smell of Chloroform in the Morning – This references a quote from the film Apocalypse Now, in which a character says, “I love the smell of napalm in the morning.”
  • Snug as a Bug on a Drug – This is a play on the phrase “snug as a bug in a rug.”

Super Meat Boy reference

Easter Eggs

The quest “Superb Meat Boy” is a reference to the game Super Meat Boy. The quest involves a man named Ed McMillen, a reference to Super Meat Boy creator Edmund McMillen.

The Dolls

Easter Eggs

When you’re introduced to the dolls, they’re all named after characters that Michael Caine portrayed in movies:

  • Charlie Croker from The Italian Job
  • Jack Carter from Get Carter
  • Gonville Bromhead from Zulu
  • Joe Vandeleur from A Bridge Too Far
  • Nigel Powers from Goldmember
  • Peachey Carnehan from The Man Who Would Be King

Plague Cure

Unlockables

If you contract the plague, you need to cure it by crafting the Phenocycline Syringe.

First, go to the Lud’s Holm safe house. If you haven’t already found the formula for the cure, it will be on top of the chemistry station.

Next, you will need the ingredients: 1 Empty Syringe, 1 Antiseptic, and 2 Filtered Water.

This will let you craft the Phenocycline Syringe and cure yourself of the plague. You should try to have one with you whenever possible, just in case.

Old English

Easter Eggs

The plague victims are actually speaking Old English. Among other things, some of them quote phrases from the epic poem Beowulf.

All Mask Locations

Hints

There are 44 collectible masks hidden throughout the world, with 20 available in Arthur’s story, 12 available in Sally’s story, and 12 available in Ollie’s story. Each mask also includes a short memory that contributes to the lore and story.

If you’re having trouble finding all of the masks, use the video guide below.

Books

Hints

Books are very useful. Getting books gives you a variety of bonuses, such as increasing the damage of your weapons, boosting the effects of healing items, reducing suspicion, and more. Bonuses stack, so be sure to pick up any books you see.

Basic Tips

Hints

Plants will glow if you can interact with them to get items. One very helpful plant for crafting healing items is the Rose of Gilead, so make sure to watch for plants with roses on them.

If you’ve been detected, you can run to a safe house to make your pursuers forget about you. Once you leave the safe house, everything will be back to normal.

Hiding out of sight for long enough will also make pursuers stop looking for you.

Guards will go after you if you’re out at night.

Make sure you’re wearing the proper clothing for the area you’re in. If you look out of place, people will become suspicious.

In certain districts, there is Joy in the water. Drinking the water will be just like taking Joy. You can drink from the water in your safe house to undo the symptoms.
