Vehicle Upgrades

Unlockables

You unlock upgrades for your vehicles as you use them. In addition to Career mode, you can also get upgrades from participating in daily/weekly/monthly events. These unlocked upgrades will improve your vehicle in most modes. However, in two modes (Daily Live events and Custom events), all upgrades available to a vehicle will be applied, even if you haven’t unlocked them yet yourself.

The Courses

Easter Eggs

The tracks are all real-world locations and can be found on maps.

Backwards Music

Easter Eggs

If you cross the finish line backwards, the music will also play backwards.

Basic Tips

Hints

When you’re just starting, don’t try to beat the best times right away. Instead, start out slowly so you can get used to the game and the stages. Once you’re skilled at driving, then you can build up and start trying for faster and faster times.

Listen to your co-driver, who will give you valuable advice.

There are many different settings, but don’t change everything at once. Try changing one setting at a time, testing it out, and then trying something else once you’re satisfied with the first change.

Daily Live

Hints

DiRT Daily Live is a special Online event where instead of using your own vehicle, you are given a random vehicle and track.

Animals on the Course

Easter Eggs

On certain tracks, deer and squirrels will cross the road. They can be difficult to pick up, especially due to the speed you’ll most likely be going at. In the video below, the footage has been slowed down when the animals appear so you can watch them cross.

Career Mode Tips

Hints

In Career mode, you have enough credits at the start to buy one vehicle, which will let you participate in one type of event. You’ll want to win and earn credits to buy more vehicles and compete in different types of events.

Credits will also be used for buying perks and hiring mechanics.

Weight, Handbrake Turns, and Pendulum Turns

Hints

For more advanced maneuvers, you’ll want to use the weight of your car to your advantage, and you actually want to use less steering than you might think. Veering wildly from side to side is not the way to do it. Handbrake turns and pendulum turns are two ways you can use the car’s weight and steering to your advantage.

Turn the car and use the handbrake to perform a handbrake turn, which will cause the back end of the car to slide. You oversteer at a low speed, which lets you to make a much tighter turn.

For a pendulum turn, you want your weight to shift right at the turn. This requires precise steps. First, slow the car with the brakes to shift the weight forward. Then move the wheel in the opposite way from the corner. After that, you’ll want to start steering toward the turn, until it’s time to turn, when you’ll want to stop braking and speed up. At the turn, you’ll then want to steer in the same direction as the rear, to eliminate any understeering. As the car switches directions, move the steering wheel with it to oversteer around the corner.

The video below will help guide you through these concepts and techniques.
