Hints

This isn’t a conventional video game that is so easily categorized. At its core, it's a giant sandbox, a place to do what you want: create and share. That's the mantra that Media Molecule has had since the Little Planet days. So if you've ever played that, you already know what you're walking into.

The Creative World of Dreams

The game is a space where you go to play and experience the dreams of Media Molecule and its community. But it's also a space where you can create dreams, whether they're art, films, music, games, or anything in between. Dreams can be seen as experiences in-game—things you can jump into and play through—and, as mentioned, they don't just have to be conventional game experiences. Some of them might be stories that are told as you progress. Others might be trippy music videos, puzzle games, racing games, platformers, or shooters—the game's tools really allow you to produce some truly outstanding creations. But at the same time, if creating isn't your thing, then the extensive catalog of dreams that have already been made and will continue to be built will also give you plenty of things to dive into.

Gameplay and Controls

But how does that play out in the game? Well, to begin with, you pick a little character to play as. These are called imps, which will be what you control in-game and in the editor. They're both characters and cursors. Sometimes they'll be your vehicle for moving through the stages; other times, you'll use them to grab and move objects so you can interact with the world around you. The game supports multiplayer, so multiple people can pick imps, and provided the game supports more than one player, you can dive in together and play through different experiences or create your own. Currently, multiplayer is limited to the number of controllers on a console. In other words, the game won't have online multiplayer at launch, but they plan to add this soon after.

Exploring the Dreams Universe

With your imp selected, it's time to explore what the game has to offer. To begin with, you'll go through a little intro sequence, which will teach you some of the basic controls for your imp and different ways you can interact with the world. You can move them around with the analog sticks or by using the motion of the controller. You can grab onto objects, drag them, pull them, push them—that sort of thing. You can also possess certain objects to activate them or take control of them, and these can then become characters for certain dreams or stages that carry their own properties and abilities, such as the ability to jump, climb, shoot, or do whatever you program them to do.

Personal Hub and Menus

This is your personal hub; it's a little barren, but this space will fill up as you play the game and make your creations. It'll eventually become much more personal to you. From here, you can dive into the menu, and at this point, you can explore the three core pillars of the game: play, create, and share.

Play Mode: Discovering Dreams

So, let's start with play. Assuming you pick up the game and want to experience what it offers or use it to inspire your ideas, you can browse dreams. These would be games, experiences, stages, and other things that both Media Molecule and the community have created. Something interesting to note when speaking to the developers, all the dreams in-game have been created using the tools in the game. Whenever they make something new for people to play, the team at the studio also has to use the tools available in-game on consoles. So the stuff you see here, the things you can play, has been and will be made using the same tools available to us, the players. The team has extensive experience with those tools, so they can make the most of them. But it's incredible knowing that even minor cuts were done in-game.

Explore and Experience Dreams

Now you can play the dreams as individual experiences. You can use the game search feature to look for dreams relevant to your interests, or you can have a thing called dream Surfing, where the game will stitch together a selection of dreams by different creators. Each time you finish one, you'll move on to the next, resulting in a rather varied and sometimes crazy experience. No two experiences are the same. And in a sandbox game like this, you play what someone wants to make. Some demos range from simple puzzle platformers to shooters, musical experiences to scary stories. And if, along the way, you get inspired to do something of your own, that's where Create comes in.

The Creative Process: Creating Dreams

Creation can be as straightforward or as complex as you want. The game has many resources and tutorials to watch if you want to learn about the tools. But if you want to start easier, you can remix an existing dream. This allows you to take something already created, dive inside, see how things were done, and make minor adjustments. Perhaps you played on an official stage and thought, "You know what? That was good, but it would have been even better if a meteor crashed onto the final platform before the boss fight." You might decide to do that. But if you want to delve deeper, you can start from scratch and build the whole world from the ground up: different visual styles, camera angles, and objectives. It's all down to you.

Collaboration and Sharing Dreams

With limited time, we quickly built simple mechanics, created platforms by copying and moving objects, and added animations, triggers, and lights to enhance the experience. In this platforming dream, you can remix live in-game to see how the boss animation was constructed. Beyond stages, you can make your own music by picking from premade stuff or mixing your own beats. It's a creator's heaven, fostering collaboration as you search for specialized creators to join your project. Once your experiences are public, share them with friends, the community, and the world for others to play, remix, and enjoy.
