Nintendo has just released a firmware update (version 4.0.0) for the Wii U and with it come some welcome additions for owners of what some call “the first next-generation console”. Probably the biggest is the new ability to play Wii U games on the GamePad screen (although note that a Wiimote will still be required to control the game).

Beyond that, you will also be able to plug a headet straight into your GamePad and participate in Wii U Chat, as well as take screenshots and have them uploaded to the net whilst you’re playing – this works just like it does on the 3DS and supported upload sites include Facebook, Tumblr and Twitter.

In addition, there’s new USB keyboard support, surround sound, some browser and download tweaks and a raft of other changes, all of which you can view right here.
